As a professional footballer, he has no case. Headbutting another player is just unacceptable conduct anyway you look at it. It probably will set a bad example for kids and it will be remembered by all.
As a human being, I can understand what he did and I may have reacted the same way in that situation. I'm sure Materazzi said something really nasty... probably about his mother and/or family and/or race. His statement about not knowing what an Islamic terrorist is reeks of bs. I've seen many of Materazzi's fouls, and he typically does something incredibly cheap and dirty, and then tries to deny everything afterward. He is definitely the cheapest player on the Italian side, and possibly the cheapest player in the world. He is ruthless. When you consider these hurtful comments and the fact that it was Zidane's last game... and his mother was in the hospital, its pretty easy to see why he lashed out. It's sad that things happened the way they did, but at least Zidane was man enough to get in front of Materazzi, turn and face him, and lay him out. As a player, shame on you Zidane. As a man, good job Zidane that piece of human trash deserved what what he got. |

no i dont think he has a case at all , the only issue is whether Matterazzi can be punished for his provoking of Zidane . I hear that when Zidane mentioned to him that he can have his shirt after the match , Matterazzi replied `i would rather have the shirt off your wife` which caused Zidane to headbutt the Italian . I dont think FIFA can hand out any fine or ban unless it has been proved Matterazzi racially abused Zidane . I suppose they could charge Matterazzi with bringing the game into disrepute or maybe unprofessional conduct but that sort of thing must go on week in week out in the leagues .
Whatever happened , Zidane failed to control himself when it was most needed ...in a World Cup Final and he did headbutt an opponent so there is no case for him to be let off or the red card erased . |

Just to correct what super kiwi said (welcome back BTW). Aime JAcquet said exactly " Zidane is an angel in everyday life but on the pitch, he is a killer"
Zidane I guess, like most of shy persons, swallows a lot of provocation and then when the cup is full burst out into some really violent reaction. One has to accept that god Zidane is only human after all. |

Someone here sounds proud of what happened in the final... pathetic.
IF he was provoked, his reaction as a PLAYER is unacceptable. IF he was provoked, his reaction as a MAN is unacceptable. How dare you say Zidane did a "good job" as a man spurfan15 ? How dare you? What kind of a (HU)MAN are you ? How dare you call a player "cheap and dirty" just because you've seen some of his fouls? Who do you think you are....God? You probably didn't even watch Materazzi play the past few seasons. You probably hoped he'd be sent off just because of your prejudice towards him. You probably thought the French player didn't dive in the area and that it was a penalty, even though there was no contact. And Mr superkiwi... You are happy that a VIOLENT ACT is part of World Cup history. All the events you listed there had NOTHING TO DO WITH VIOLENCE. How proud you must be. "legendary" No, only STUPID, and violent. If I could enter people's minds, I'd rather delete the whole event rather than raise Zidane to the heavens like you are doing. It's disgraceful. |

About the word case, maybe I used a wrong word because of my english, well I wanted to say Zidane's affair or something like that... Well I think you understand what I mean
Hi bigbroantonio!!! About the act itself, I'm not happy at all, don't misunderstand me! As I have said before, I would like to see him quitting that world cup as a great player as he was. That headbutt was a real shock for me and probably for most of us. But now that have be done, we can't return to the past unfortunatly. In this topic, I'm not judging him, everybody can judge him, but that's not the problem I want to highlight in this topic. What I want to highlight is that we are assisting to an historical moment of that world cup, whatever it is a good or a bad moment! That headbutt will be remembered forever in the world cup history, no doubt about it, as many key events in the history of the world cup, and to me (and maybe most of us), it's the first time we are contemporary with an historical moment! I was too young to see the hand of god of Maradonna, I was not born to see Pelé triying to score from the middle of the field, too young to remember Schumacher's attack, not born to see that controversy english goal in 1966. As I have said before, football is more than a sport, it's a caricature of real life. Football, in its rules, is a middle age sport! It isn't a perfect science sport, a little team can sometimes beat a great team, a referee can do mistake. Do technology must be used to add more justice in football, as it is done in rugby or basketball? Of course not! Because it's not perfect, football is a famous through the world! It's the most human sport and the most democratic sport, unlike rugby that require strong body players for example... A Roberto Carlos that is not very tall can be one of the best players of the world! That's why a headbutt from Zidane, which is a violent act, is before all a human act that unfortunatly we can find everywhere in the world. And as Zidane is not a common player, that make that human act forever remembered. Do you remember the red card of Desailly during the 1998 final? Of course not, because he is not a legendary player. But do you remember the tears of Maradonna in 1990? Of course yes, even if tears in final are very common! 2006, with his good and bad points, will be remembered as the last world cup of Zidane. I'm not judging anything, we are living something, that what is the point of the topic. Nobody can justify violence of course, and not me! |

So, Zidane has talked today in french television!
Unfortunatly, he didn't say what Materazzi has said. He has just said that it was "very grave". He confirmed that his mother and sister was aimed, so the brazilian hypothesis is confirmed. He added that he will never apologize for what he has done to Materazzi, and that his act was not a crazy act, he assume it. He didn't say anything about racist insult nor terrorist things. He is not clear at all, so the mystery remains... We think that he doesn't say anything about terrorist act because it's a "serious" accusation that should have consequences, but it's just a french speculation. But it's not finished yet, because Zidane will be convoked by FIFA's administration, and we think that he will tell everything about this affair... |

Zidane has just mad excuse towards french supporters!!! He admited that it was not a good thing, just hope that children has listened him!
So I think, most of that case is over now... I hope the 39% of French that didn't want to forgive him will forgive him after these apologizes. I hated him at the beginning, but now I forgive what he has done to us. Time to turn the page now! |
