virtually everybody, even the participating teams, knows PK shootout after ET is not much more than a coin flip, which is a ridiculous tool to decide the champion of the most important sporting event in the world every 4 years.

Would you think that PK should be gotton rid of and replaced by something else? Share your ideas.

For me, since a third extra time is impractical, I like to see something that still reflect the teams' ability. How about a 3 vs 3? Each team pick three of their own players (plus Goalie for defense) The offense start at center pitch and given a set amount of time (like one minute) they could dribble all they want but they need to score within that time frame. The defending side, of course, need to prevent that from happening by taking possession of ball or simply let the time run out.

Why I think this could be a good alternative:

1. It does reflect the skills of the teams and therefore the result is not a simple coin flip.
2. Strategy involving the coach: would you pick your three best attackers, aniticpating the opposing team picking their three best defenders? Or would you spread out, anticipating such shootout may go to the 2nd, 3rd round?
3. it does not put 90% of the burden on the goalie. A team need to have well-rounded players to be successful.
4. For the fans, it's fun to guess and watch.
5. results could be achieved in short period of time. Sure, it's more exhausting than shooting PKs alone but I think the effort is well worth it.

I think this could be much better than PKs. Well, of course I am daydreaming, but it's still fun to dream.

Lap dance contest or maybe both goalies doing heads-up poker.

Funny how noone complained or made similar suggestions when Italy lost to penalties in 1994.

Seeing as most of FIFA is somehow French, and thus sad about the result, I'm sure this time things will change in some way!

Yes, penalties are a bit of a coin toss - but they DO reflect team condition, usually. Maybe we should consider prolonging penalties - ALL the players should take a shot.

The other solution is to repeat the match (which is what they used to do before money got involved), or to keep it going till they drop!

Another curious idea I've heard is to drop a player every x minutes from both sides.

I personally don't mind them, maybe it could be changed for the finals though. I do think it is stupid that teams will play back and wait, knowing they have a better chance at kicks than if they open up and play.

I like the idea of making more people shoot, which would be more of a team effort. It's not so easy with soccer (like say hockey where it's easy to decide this stuff). One thing that should be changed is ET should be sudden death; next goal wins. But a never-ending ET would just be stupid after a while as the quality of the game would diminish badly and people wouldn't care to watch. One idea would be adding 3 new subsitutions per side for ET, so that fresh bodies can come on and hopefully increase the possibility for goals.

Either way, the kicks ARE exciting but a coin toss for a championship is a little lame so if they could somehow alter the way kicks are done I think they could still work.

Don't mind PK's myself even though England always lose on them , but I would prefer to see the golden goal brought back. Sometimes the best team in the game goes out when they didn't deserve to lose the match Smile

Are you american yolkie? Because this isn't basketball. Let penalties stay. And by the way, penalties do reflect skills. It's not all about luck, it's skill and mental strenght too.

i agree i always hate penalty's,really.

what would have happened if germany held on to the 0-0 a few minutes more?

they would have become world champions, well it was a big chance of this happening if the germans reached the final.

it's part of football but a lot of teams play very well and at the end have nothing because they loose with penalty's!like argentina!!

After a 30 minutes of extra time I propose a new game a week later (good for FIFA, TV and supporters).

New game but after 90' there is no more limit of time : Score or Lose !
It might take 3 days but that's the way it is !

Golden Goal for sure, even with PKs, should be back.

I don't really have a problem with penalty kicks if it is indeed needed to settle a game - I however HATE to watch teams just lock down and do nothing while waiting for the PKs. It's boring, it's slow and that team does not deserve to win.

Not much to be done, but that is the worst part about PKs.

I think the Silver goal is the best actually because the golden goal situation leads to defensive football
because you know that with one mistake by the goalie, the defender or the ref you are out...

I'm against the idea of golden ball coming back.

I like it the way it is now.

penalties is like a coin flip. It shows which side is stronger at penalties and which side's golkeeper are better. Even though sometimes these things are to do with luck. i think it should be replaced, but unless they come out with a good idea, PSO will still be done and rememebred.

Either way, a bad team has a much better chance at winning on penalties than winning in the game. Does a team that is pretty weak compared to their opponent, who sits back and does Nothing the entire game but play defense really deserve to win in a PSO? No, but sadly this has happened far too many times.

See, I'm not totally saying the shootout is a terrible thing, I just Hate how it affects the gameplay due to the notion of "hey, if we hold them off for X more minutes we'll be in the PSO and then who knows what can happen".
