I never expected him to sign for a smaller club. Does anyone know why he did it? Did he fight with the coach or the president or something? Or did they just offer him a contract he couldn't refuse?

I like Pablito. Riquelme did a good job in the WC, but i think Aimar could have been at least as good if he was a starter.

Valencia just wanted to get rid of him, and Aimar wanted a new challenge

Maybe this is a good choice for his career...although Zaragoza are a bit tooo small, i'd have picked Betis, Seville, Atletico, Espanyol, etc...

I agree, surely there were bigger clubs in Europe who would have signed him for such a small transfer fee? I think he is a brilliant player!!!!

He'd be ideal for ManU, for example. I'm surprised they didn't make a move for him. 11 mil Euros is dirt cheap for such a player. I dunno, maybe Ferguson was afraid of another Veron situation where a good Argentinian playmaker simply doesn't fit with the rest of the team? But that's silly. You can't be sure unless you give someone a try and Aimar is certainly worth the risk.

But i shouldn't turn this into a MU thread. This is about Aimar and his bizarre decision to join a team as small as Zaragoza when he's still at his prime (26).

Yea i totally agree, its the same with Riquelme playing for Villareal. They done well last season, but now they have been dumped out Inter-toto all they have is La Liga too concentrate on. A player of Aimar and Riquelme's ability should be in the Champions League every season.

Yes, definitely. Riquelme is a similar case, despite Villareal's success last season. It seems that some players (especially South Americans) are sometimes so desperate to stay in Spain after their spell in one of the big clubs there that they'll sign with (practically) anyone.

I see it now with Saviola. He still belongs to Barcelona and 3 teams showed interest in buying him this summer: Arsenal, Sevilla and Panathinaikos (the team i support). Panathinaikos made the best offer by far but he said he doesn't want to come to Greece. I can understand that cause he's still young and Panathinaikos aren't in the Champions League this year, but at least he would be playing. Right now Saviola has made it clear to Barca that he has been unable to find a club and that he is at their disposal, so basically unless THEY manage to find him a club (and again he could say no) he'll just be warming the Barca bench IF he even makes the squad.

I don't know. Maybe he knows best. And in a way i'm glad Panathinaikos didn't spend that much money on a player i consider to be good but slightly overrated.

We did get this Argentinian left winger (more like a left forward in a 4-3-3 system, really), Romero, who looks superb and scored a scorcher against Southampton yesterday. Panathinaikos seem to only buy Croats, Danes and Argentinians for some reason...

I have a Panathinaikos top, i visit Crete regularly so i got it when i was there. OFI Crete are rubbish, although they have a nice stadium there.

I think Celtic went for Saviola on loan a couple of seasons ago, but we couldn't agree terms. I think it was Barcelona doing us a favour since they signed Larsson.

PAO against Rangers in the CL, i was supporting you guys!!! Basinas 35 yard strike! Very Happy

marios, as for saviola to Arsenal, I think it is Arsenal who are not interested. But I hope he will stay in Barcelona.
Regarding Aimar, he is a world class midfield. I think Valencia will struggle next season.

Moravcik, it's a shame we got rid of Basinas. He's doing so well in Spain right now. A couple of years ago PAO's president decided to get rid of most of the existing squad because the fans were angry that we kept losing to Olympiakos. The straw that broke the camel's back was the game at the end of the season where PAO had to play Olympiacos away and needed only 1 point to win the title. They managed to lose and several fans were so angry the went to PAO's training ground and trashed the parking lot and some of the players' cars. A few players were happy to leave after that (a couple of them to Olympiacos, actually). The only player left from that team is Goumas, the captain.

I've just read that Barca are trying to give Saviola on loan to Racing Santander.

He he! That's from basketball. Panathinaikos have dominated the last decade in this sport.

They're singing something like "Panatha i love you like heroin like drugs, wherever you play i'll follow you, PAO here PAO there wherever you play i'll be there!".

Olympiacos were class most of last year though (in football i mean). Look at this goal from their 5-1 victory over PAOK:

There's turmoil in Valencia and that could be a factor this year for them. Ayala wants out and Aimar is gone now. I don't know. I thought Valencia last year had a good shot in dethroning Barcelona but it doesn't look like thats going to be the case now.

Zaragoza will probably grab a CL spot this season. As for the top 2, it will be Barca and Real again... in that order. I'm not sure which team can grab that other CL spot, but i'm not sure Valencia can do it this year.

Which teams will finish 3rd and 4th this year then? Any ideas besides Zaragoza and Valencia? Osasuna? Sevilla? Celta Vigo? Deportivo? Is there a team that will surprise everyone this year, besides possibly Zaragoza i mean?

I agree, i don't think Valencia will be as strong this season. David Villa won't be as much as a suprise to the Spanish defences, they will mark him much more closely.

Villareal have to be in with a shout again if they keep hold of Riquelme, Sorin, Senna etc.

David Villa is not a newbie in La Liga. He started playing in Sporting de Gijón in 2nd Division. He did a couple of pretty good seasons and was picked by Zaragoza. There he had another two seasons with 15 goals or so and was sold again, this time to Valencia by 12 million euros, a "madness" like Valencia fans used to say, cos they got the almighty Patrick Kluivert. Well, the history repeated again and Villa was the starter striker for all the season and 2nd maximum scorer in la liga. Kluivert has been cut this summer...
I don't think it is a matter of defences, he has experience and he must have already scored around 60 goals in la liga.

Btw, great match yesterday against Chelsea mate!!. I really enjoyed watching some Celtic players like Ross Wallace (he did a great play in the second half) and specially Evander Sno...what a player you have bought! And he's only 19.

Yes Sno looks like a good buy, our Scout has been sounding out young players from Europe and he looks to be a good signing for the future.

Maybe he won't score 25 goals but he'll still be a factor I think. He's one of the best strikers in the world.
