If Andriy Shevchenko is the face of Ukrainian football, his national team colleague Alexandr Shovkovski also merits recognition as Ukraine bid for their first appearance in a FIFA World Cup finals.

They have never qualified before, can they win it?

They have a world class goalscorer and an prganised team!?

Can they do a Greece?

I dont think they will go that far but they should do quite well, they have a good team and Shevchenko in attack. Mabye Q-Finals but no more than that.

Totally agree with you there, Shevchenko deserves a world cup, hes done evrything but hes never played in a world cup which is terrible as he is a world great and world greats should play in biggest tournaments.

Ukraine have no chance of winning the World Cup. Shevchenko does deserve a world cup but I doubt he will ver get one as a player if a manager !

I think they could qualify, they have a few stars players and and organised team. Depends what group they get drawn in as to how far they get, the nearly got in in 2002, had it not been for Germany (woops).

They are top in their group this time though. Greece are in their group too but they look like they will make it this time.

Shevchenko is a great player... but you need more than one star in your team to win the world cup.

I don't think ukraine will win it; no team from Eastern Europe ever has; but teams from that region do have a big tradition of upsetting the odds and reaching the final when nobody expected it. The czechs reached the final in 62 (I believe). Bulgaria were semi finallists in 94, Croatia in 98, the Czechs also reached the fina of the 96 euro and the semis in 2004.

There always are these upsets, people shouldn't expect every game to go to the form book. On paper you'd expect semi finallists of, possibly, Netherlands, Germany, Argentina, Brazil. But it won't necessarily go like that.

As well as Ukraine I think Poland could also raise eyebrows, and also the USA.
