Hamburg are close to finalising a deal to sign Argentina captain Juan Pablo Sorin from Villarreal.

The 30-year-old full-back is not in the first-team plans at Villarreal and was given permission to join Bolton Wanderers earlier in the summer.

Sorin decided against that move because Bolton had not qualified for Europe, but now looks set to get the chance to play Champions League football for Hamburg after agreeing terms for a three-year contract at the AOL Arena.

The Bundesliga club's director of sport, Dietmar Beiersdorfer, told Bild: "Sorin is the captain of Argentina and we have a squad full of young players so it would be great for them to have alongside them such an experienced player."

Should Sorin eventually sign, he will become HSV's third defensive signing of the summer following the arrivals of Joris Mathijsen from AZ Alkmaar and Vincent Kompany from Anderlecht.
