Hi all,ive noticed you are all fairly young and interested which is great. At 16 you can take your level 1.Its good to get involved with a kids team at that age helping an adult.
Level 1 is basic
Level 2 is a semi pro coaching course which is great for grassroots, womens clubs and as I say anything upto semi pro.It takes about 6 months to pass.
The good thing about level 2 is it can get you good paid work.
I am level 2 and have been a while and I work at Bradford City and I manage the Leeds City Vixens 1st team.
Its a good living if you put the effort and hours in and you are good at it.I know a lot of coaches who are out of work mostly cos people dont like them so its good to develop your people skills.
I only got into coaching 2 years ago after 10 years in the car industry. That helped my coaching becasue I was confident and knew how to deal with people so dont rush it.It takes time and you need to be likeable but firm at the same time.
Uefa B will be next for me then the final 1 of ueaf a but like Glenn Roeder he is only as qualified as myself its the experiance more than anything once youve passed level 2.
Good Luck to all you future coaches and if you need any help or advice give me a shout.

I am a qualified level 2 coach and have been for about a year.I work at Bradford City as a community coach.I also coach Guisley ladies and I am the 1st team manager and coach of Leeds City Vixens who are 2 promotions away from the womens national premier.I think moving from level 1 to level 2 is a massive step.It teaches you so much more.In my opinion I think you should be level 1 for about 6 mths as long as your actively involved in coaching then move on to level 2.I would go to your local shool of excellence and watch the qualified coaches. You will gain useful tips. Also do your homework on coaching it will make it easier.I am a member of grassrootscoaching.com which offers thousands of drills for different age groups. You need to be different from everyone else and be a good communicator and be confident.Good luck to my fellow coaches!!

Hi, i was wondering, how much does it cost to take a level 1 course, how long does it take and is it quite easy or hard? Do you have to take an official F.A. course?

I see alot of young people like myself want to become football coaches, which i think is great. I am currently doing an NVQ 2 in Football which will get me the FA Level 1 badge. I've been studying for two weeks with only one real day intense learning. My tutor is an academy coach at Bolton Wanderers and holds the UEFA A Licence. I know people who have done the level one and one person who is almost done with their leve 2 and are doing the NVQ 2 for more experience. We haven't really done any coaching as of yet aside from the proper warm ups needed for different ages and for goalkeepers. However, if you want to become a coach, consider the following skills and qualities a coach should posses:

Know how to communicate well with participants
Understand the learning process and principles of training
Be able to assess strengths and weakness' and implement appropriate training methods
Understand the various coaching styles
Understand the capabilities of growing children and aid in the development of participants
Be aware of potential over training and reduce the risk of injury as much as possible
Prepare fun and innovative training methods for specific age/ability groups
Understand all aspects of the sport
Persevere and be patient when appropriate
Inspire, encourage and motivate participants
Be sensitive and supportive of participants
Problem analysis and solving problems

If you understand them, your definatley on your way to becoming a successful coach.

For those of you doing your level 2, or who have completed it. You should try to go to America during the summer where there are a lot of opportunities for coaching football.

One last thing I'll say is that if you want to be a coach, DON'T assume if you get your A Licence your going to be a Premiership Manager. Spend as much time as possible working with children because they are the future of the sport, and then try to get your Academy Managers' Licence. Then think about moving into the professional coaching.

--edit--
Just remembered one thing my tutor said when he was doing one of his badges (not sure which one he was doing at the time). While he was being assesed on a session he was taking, he sent the group out to do the warm up and then realised he had marked his area out 10 yeards too short, but he rectified it as soon as he could. For those of you about to do any of the badges, he said not to just leave it as the assessor will have your session plan and see if you have done what you said you would, and will realise you have recognised and rectified a mistake.

hi im a newbie to the site and am a level 2 qualified coach, i am hoping one day to progress onto the level 3 (Pro licence) but am restricted because of
1) the full residential week required and 2) cost as i would not recieve and funding.

I feel that i have learnt a lot and been able to put this back into the footballing community and now feel that i look at the game in a different way.

i will be more than willing to help anyone who needs any help and advice on progressing at least to the level 2 badge

black,
The way to get funding is to join a Club adn offer to do a seasons coaching if they fund you through the qualification. The Club cant lose because they are getting a Level 2 coach into their Club ( especially if they want to go Charter Standard) and IF you didnt pass the Level then the loss is yours!!. The cost of the course can be offset against the cost that you would have charged for coaching.

I'm still reading mate!

All these courses can be confusing but I would suggest that the first stop for advice would be your local County FA. Each of them has a Football Development Officer (FDO) whose role is to help grassroots football teams, managers, coaches and clubs. They will be able to advise on what each of the courses entails and, possibly, sources of funding.

I don't know where your location is but put your County followed by 'FA' into Google and you'll find their website and contact details.

Good luck!

Ameer,
Yes, the first badge (Level1) is indeed the 1st4sport Level 1 certificate in coaching football.

Residential training is where you live at the place you take your coaching badges with the other candidates for intensive training. It is mainly used only for UEFA A and B. Usually you take Level 1 and 2 over a the course of a week or a few weekends but although residential is quicker it MUCH more expensive!

There are many coaching awards although the mainstream route from A to B is:
Level 1
Level 2
Uefa 'B' (sometimes called Level 3)
Uefa 'A'
UEFA PRO

Depending on what level you wish to coach at will determine what qualifications you need.
Chelsea manager will need UEFA PRO
Professional league club coaches will need UEFA A or B
Academy coaches can coach with a Level 2
Charter Standard Junior sides with a Level 1

Hope this helps and sorry about the delay posting!

Thanks cshipley that I really helpful I want to get to the uefa pro license eventually but I will obviously need to do the level 1,2,3 before anything.

Do u know where is the best place to do it, I understand that level 1 is done at clubs training ground like Spurs for example.

Also roughly how long would it take to complete 1,2,3

if you dont mind me asking where are you from? which county? because they will have a local FA wiill frequently run Level 1 and 2 courses throughout the year.

Level 1 takes about 3 weekends or a full week. It is quite a simple course.

Level 2 is similar in length of time but you are assessed about 6 months after the course and have to complete a portfolio, and its the same for Level 3.

Level 1 is easy if not a guarantee to pass and costs about £60 I think I can recall! Its a good place for young coaches to start anyhow!
