A Jose Antonio Reyes goal earned Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Tottenham at Highbury and ensured that Chelsea will have to wait a little longer before clinching the Premiership title.




Had the Gunners failed to beat Spurs then Jose Mourinho's side would have been crowned champions but a polished performance from Arsenal gave the Blues little hope of an early title celebration.

Jose Reyes could and should have given the hosts the lead inside two minutes but having gone round Paul Robinson his right-shot screwed wide of the target with an open goal gaping.

Cesc Fabregas then gave the Spanish winger a similar opportunity on his left boot and this time the Spanish winger made no mistake with a thumping finish past Paul Robinson.

In between this Jermain Defoe wasted a superb chance to put Spurs ahead but his powerful shot was not good enough to beat an alert Jens Lehmann.

Arsene Wenger's side dominated much of the second period with Reyes and Robert Pires squandering good chances to extend the Gunners lead.

This made for a nervy final ten minutes with Robbie Keane, on as a substitute, glancing a header just wide of Lehmann's left-hand post with the German well beaten.

Tottenham then screamed for a penalty when Cole dived on the ball to shepherd it out of play but referee Mike Riley waved away their desperate appeals.

Lehmann's confident goalkeeping saw Arsenal through the remaining moments of the game and secured a league double over their north London rivals.

Mathematically the three points also keeps Arsenal's title hopes alive but Chelsea can seal Premiership glory with a win against Bolton on Saturday.
