Everton v Doncaster rovers game called off minutes before kick off due to roof of stand not being safe down to hight winds at time, I think a bolt had dropped off. We were then told if everyone left the stand the game could go ahead, but 18 mins into game after Jody Handley had put Everton into the lead the steward stopped the game. Sad Sad
This photo does not show how bad the wind was the roof was actually moving up and down so I think
the steward was right.

Everton 1 Donnie Belles 0 (Abandoned after about 17 minutes)

A really windy day meant that this was never going to be a classic - the conditions wouldn't allow it.

A few minutes before the kick-off, most of the people in the stand (which is behind a goal) moved out and went to the standing area under cover near the half-way line. But some stayed put.
It appears the chief steward had asked them to move. When some stayed put the next thing we knew, the game had been called off.
I asked why, and he said the stand was dangerous in the wind - a bolt had dropped out apparently.
But after a discussion between him and the referee, and a couple of fans putting in their bit, he decided it could take place if everyone vacated the area behind the goal. Something was said about them starting in 15 minutes, but the players and officials were just about to go on the pitch, and there were so few people to move, it started fairly soon after.
(See Ron's comments)

The crowd of about 60 saw a few minutes of scrappy play - the wind was so strong that Doncaster tried a shot on goal almost straight from the kick-off, which went just wide.
Everton had most of the play however, and got their goal through Jody Handley at around 10 minutes, quite a scrappy affair, but ended up in the net.
Doncaster managed a couple of attacks on the break, but were caught offside each time.

Then, after around 17 minutes, a ball boy came and said "He's calling it off."
Then there was a bit of confusion when the chief steward went on the pitch and stopped the game. Most of the players and officials seemed totally bemused by his decision, as the area behind the goal was sealed off, and the wind was blowing from the pitch towards the stand, so nothing could have landed on the pitch.
Eventually they seemed to accept this, and players etc shook hands and gradually left the playing area.
Fara Williams quizzed him the whole time they walked off - she seemed quite annoyed.
I couldn't hear all they were saying, but she looked quite animated when she asked "Why?" Laughing

Someone asked him after why it was off, and he said "It's too dangerous for football."

And we didn't get a refund Laughing

Btw - they must have expected something to happen, as they weren't selling any programmes Wink

Wasn't it odd that about 15 kids then started to play football at the goals right in front of that stand while the chief steward watched.. Then the Doncaster players came back out after 5 minutes and stayed on the pitch warming down (still there when I left) he also directed people out away from the stand... just about every one of them went round to the other side of the stand where the car park is.

If it was unsafe then the place should ahve been cleared and the council informed.. but they kept the clubhouse open (right behind the main stand) and let people use the pitch... In fact the only thing that wasn't happening was the actual match.

Complete and utter farce.

Got lots of what will probably be stock pictures on my site from the game.

Totally agree Tony.
I asked Ron if he'd go and get a pic of the stand, and he went back to get one.
Apparently they were shouting "Watch out" or something to him - just having a laugh.

And thanks for your comments trooper matey - £2 down there Sad
I did think of mugging the guy with the tin of money from entries as he walked past the car after the game Laughing
