Injuries wreck Frankfurt trip |
|
Newcastle will face Eintract Frankfurt in the UEFA Cup on Thursday night with 11 players out after Kieron Dyer and Scott Parker joined the injury list.
Glenn Roeder will now be forced to turn to his youth players for the Group H clash in Germany, from which his side need just one point to finish top. Dyer, who this season has again endured a torrid time with injuries, will miss the game after suffering gashes to his thigh in the 1-0 victory over Portsmouth at St James' Park on Sunday. Parker, meanwhile, was forced to come off in the same game with a back injury. The pair join Michael Owen, Damien Duff, Shola Ameobi, Craig Moore, Olivier Bernard and Tim Krul on the injury list, with second-choice keeper Steve Harper already in Germany for an operation on his double hernia. And it could get worse for The Magpies, with James Milner undergoing treatment on his hip and Charles N'Zogbia struggling with a bruised shin. "Scott Parker has had a scan on his back and it has shown he has a strained muscle," said Roeder. "While it is difficult to say how long he will be out of action, he will not be with us in Frankfurt. "Kieron Dyer will not be going to Germany either. His leg was so bad with lacerations that he spent Sunday night in hospital having the wound cleaned. "Steve Harper is already in Germany and, while we would have liked to have waited until after Thursday's match for him to have his operation, he has a double hernia and the medical experts have advised us that he should have his operation as soon as possible. "We have had six players having had major operations so far. "It also means that, for the second trip into Europe, we will have a teenage keeper with us in the shape of Fraser Forster, who will be on the bench to cover Shay Given on Thursday night." |

Yeah very gutsy performance. Great to see we've wrapped it up and can now concentrate on climbing the league ladder.
