Level 2 and injured!!! |
|
I am due to start me level 2 coaching qual on the 20/12/06, however, i recently had multiple ligament tears in my knee, (ACL, PCL, and Medial). I am resonably mobile, but obviously can't run or play football, do drills etc. (on NHS waiting list so could be in this state for a a while).
Will the FA allow me to take the course? Is it essential to take part in the practical session or can you observe them and not take part? I personally don't think one needs to take part to understand and coach the drills, your thoughts??? Any advice is much appreciated. Scottie |

They really shouldn't - however it may affect your ability to demonstrate appropriately, do you feel confident enough in your ability to get the point across without showing?
There was a lad on our course did his ankle in just before we did the full week of it and they had no problem - this was for the internal assessments though, not the external. |

Thanks Ian...
Yeah i feel confident in delivering sessions etc... i just wasn't sure if taking part in the drills was a must. Have coached cricket to a high level and football at junior clubs etc. Level 1 assesor told me to get on the level 2 asap (must have been doing something right). I am currently taking a degree in sports science and have undertaken coaching placements and have studied the science of coaching in depth. |

I personally think you will be ok!
On my Level2 I remember some of us younger guys literally carried the older coaches, we played in Short Sided Games all day for almost 6hours while others just watched and awaited their turn. I'm sure if your confident you will be okay and that you will be able to deliver a 15mins session. Also on my course we had a certified physio present so any injury realted concerns just have a word with him/her as they will know better than anyone! |

Cheers cshipley,
hopefully some of the guys (young and old) will be able to carry me through the practical aspects of the course. lol 15 min session doesn't seem to daunting!! might be handy if physio is present. |

Not sure about your area Scottie, but some areas will let you do the weeks course and then come and watch you at your club etc, if there is a reason such as yours for not being able to perform at your best.
Could you contact the tutor before the course? |

Thnaks Robbo,
Managed to get in touch with the course tutor yesterday, he seemed to think it would be fine and there would be no requirement for me to take part in practical sessions (due to injury). So it seems i will be allowed to start the course as planned on wednesday. |

If your injury will not allow you to even demonstrate, you can ask someone to do your demonstrations as long as you can communicate what needs to be done to the participants what they need to do. So, find someone you can rely on, maybe someone who is sharing your topic if that is the case? It is not whether you can do the drill, it is whether you can teach someone to do it. To me, that is what coaching is about.

Finally had the external assesment for the level 2 today , and am pleased to say that i passed!!!
I am currently 3 months post operation to repair the damage so went through the course not being able to take part, back jogging in straight lines, but still a long way to go till back to full fitness. |

I've done my level 1 and been asked to complete my level 2, but I am self employed and cant really take the time off. are there and real alternatives to the level 2, I'm only learning for my benefit not a job change.
