Gerrard set for contracts talks |
|
The Anfield skipper has been the subject of a year-long campaign of speculation and rumour that he is heading to Chelsea this summer.
But now Gerrard claims he believes Liverpool are heading in the right direction, after the club ousted Chelsea from the Champions League to book a place in the final. The England midfielder has insisted all along that his future at Anfield would depend on the club's progress on the field. Now he says he will have talks with chief executive Rick Parry and boss Rafael Benitez after the Istanbul final on May 25. Gerrard, in a Liverpool Echo interview, says: "I've said all along all I wanted was to see the club going in the right direction and this shows we are. Now we want to go on and win the competition.' "I didn't want any distractions before the (Chelsea) game and it will be the same before the final. But after the Champions League final I can say I'll be sitting down with Rick Parry and the gaffer and discussing the future. "That's been the situation for a while so, from that point of view, nothing's changed. But obviously a result like this helps everyone at the club and we'll have a lot of positive things to talk about.'' Gerrard was significantly the last Liverpool player to leave the pitch after the triumph over Chelsea, celebrating in turn with all four sides of a stadium which was rocking with noise and emotion. He said at the time: "At the end I felt like jumping in and celebrating with the fans. They are the best in the country by miles and I just hope they enjoy the final as much as they enjoyed this evening. "I can't take it in. This is the best night of my life by a million miles and it will be the proudest moment of my career when I lead these incredible men out in Istanbul. "We have beaten the Premiership champions for the first time in five attempts this season, but it was well worth the wait.'' He added: "I'm made up for the fans, you won't find an atmosphere like that anywhere but here. The place was shaking when we were just warming up and I hope they enjoy Istanbul when we bring the trophy back. "This is a magnificent confidence boost. We haven't been good enough in the league but we have been awesome in the Champions League. "You will again see performances like the semi-final when we go to Istanbul, I can assure everyone of that. "Winning it will be more important than finishing fourth, of course it will. "Chances to win the European Cup don't come along too often and we have to grasp the moment and make sure that in Istanbul we have no regrets.'' |
