Preston are reported to be eyeing up League One top scorer Billy Sharp as a potential replacement for Dave Nugent.
But North End have been told it could cost at least £2m to land the prolific 21-year-old, who banged in 32 goals to fire Scunthorpe to the title this season.

Manager Paul Simpson is said to have made a firm enquiry about Sharp as he searches for a hitman to fill Nugent's shooting boots next term.

The England international is almost certain to quit Deepdale for the Premiership after the club's failure to win promotion.

And while it could be July or even August before Simpson knows for sure what he has to spend on a new striker, the PNE boss is already busy lining up candidates for the job. Preston will face stiff competition from several other clubs if Sharp is top of their wish-list.

To be honest i think Sharp should take a little time to asses his options. He obviously has a very bright future in the game and, i don't mean any offence Steve, but i'm not sure Preston would be the right move. I can see him maybe going to Charlton if Bent departs for a return to the Premiership.

Scunthorpe have turned down a bid from Sheffield Wednesday for Billy Sharp, while Preston have joined the race to sign the striker.

The Owls are believed to have offered £1.5m for 21-year-old Sharp.

"Sheffield Wednesday have made a bid and we have turned it down," said Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins.

"There is going to be a lot of speculation throughout the summer about Billy as he is a hot property. He is our player and we want him to stay."

Sharp has been with Scunthorpe since joining in August 2005 from Sheffield United for a fee of £100,000.

Adkins added: "We have spoken to his agent and both he and Billy are well aware that we want him to stay.

"It is going to be a long summer, it is still early days, and the scenario is that this situation will run and run for the length of the summer.

"But Billy Sharp will not leave unless there is a move that is right for him and Scunthorpe United are reimbursed accordingly."

I think going to Preston would be a good move for Sharp.

I think he has a lot too owe too Scunthorpe. And maybe stay for one more year, too help consolidate them as a Championship side.

I feel if he was too leave now Scunthorpe will go down, but if he can stay one more year, prove himself at Championship level, he will be worth more, and possibly have a move too the Premier League with Cardiff for next season.

But would be a great signing, but if he was too go to Preston, it would mean bye bye Nugent.

I wondered about that as well, I hope cardiff fans are allowed to come, the atmosphere was [beep!] this season without any away fans to have banter with.

I hope we are allowed back. Me and my friend Daniel went too that game. Most awkward and intimidating atmosphere ive ever been at, as I could not celebrate our goal. My friend jumped up and shouted "C*nts!" it was a quick reaction, very lucky we were.

But Moxey is an idiot, and wont let us come back. Why shouldnt we ban Wolves from our ground, you ripped out our seats and caused problems, so did Birmingham, WBA, leicester, Derby, Spurs we havent banned them.

Moxey is an idiot !

Sharpe will move to Wolves or Norwich within the next few days I would imagine.

If he goes to Norwich I would expect Earnie to go to Derby.

I can see him going to either us if we up the price or Wolves cant see him wanting to go to Norwich with the location and everything in mind.
