Certainly in my opinion, the diamond is to keep people happy. Which i dont mind because althought mourinho does this to keep his superstars happy, the superstars are just that. Having Lampard and Essien on the wings, although is not great they are that technically gifted they make up for what they lose. However if Mourinho wants to quash all his stars in his team then he should but he has to work out a way to keep the width which is simple.
Up front, Shev Drogba.
In middle, play the diamond with Essien holding, Ballack attacking, Frank on the right, with Robben on the left. Save Claud for the Champions League games and big epl games, he is 33 and although he is an incredible security blanket to the defence, i think he can be rested.
So Robben accounts for the the left wing, now on the right, you account for that by playing the attacking Paulo Ferreira at right back. Left back is Ashley Cole (even though i think Bridge is better) in the centre Ricardo and Terry.
Another option to keep width is the same back 4. Play Drogba on his own up front. Pack a 5 man midfield. With Maka holding, ballack attacking, lampard right. Essien is so fit that i recon he could be the guy who plays in the dead centre of the park behind Ballack. He can get out to the left and to the right, drop back etc.

Seriously Andry Sehvchenko is not a winger he is a center forward why is Mourinho playing him on the wing and Srjen Robben is one of the most important Chelsea players a gr8 winger a player who really has his heart in the club
