I thought it was the 'Butcher of Bilbao'?? Or was that someone else?

It was Butcher, not Beast. Remember when he broke Maradona's ankle?

Scirea was another great Libero who kept the brilliant Barsei out of the Italian national side for his entire career.

I voted Maradonna beacause this THE reference in football.

But the others are also of very fine players.

Well i think it would be fair to class Beckenbauer as the greatest player ever. He was a defender, but he was so good some people do class him as the best ever.

Good point Sticky, Bobby Moore too.

Bobby Moore was way better than Beckenbauer. One of the few who could tame the mighty Pele.

And talking of goalkeepers(!) - Banksys save against Pele has been thought of as the best save ever. Apart from Dudeks save in the Champions League final (which admittedly was a reaction save - Dudek aint the best goalie by far), who has been consistently the best goalie in memory. And don't say bloody Kahn!

Best keepers I've seen .

1960's Banks
1970's Jennings
1980's Southall
1990's Schmeichel
2000's Buffon

Admittedly this is biased towards the English league because until Channel 4 and Sky started showing other leagues from around the world in the 90's , my view of foreign goalies was limited to World Cups and European /Uefa Cups .

Yeah, Dino Zoff and Lev Yashin deserve a place there, but as you say, your knowledge of 'keepers outside of England before the 90's is limited.

Dasaev was also very good and could deserve the 80s title.

Chilavert, Seaman or Kahn could also get the 90's title.

Maybe not the best keeper in the 80's, but Shilts wasn't bad - he saw off a couple of good keepers at the time challenging for his England place; Ray Clemence & Gary Bailey.

But at the end of his International career, he frustrated me - I'll never forget how he "fell over" either way when attempting to save the spot kicks in the '90 semi-final. And what he was trying to do coming out in the 3rd place play off v Italy God only knows.

He said they were the best he's seen, not the best overall.

And do you claim to have seen these guys play or are you just going by what you've read on the net?

Have to agree with most of these choices - Clemence and Shilts could be crowbarred in with the 70/80's. We always seemed to have the best goalies at one time. Whether we did or not I'm not sure. Limited knowledge on that, methinks. I'd have to go for Schmeichel overall, tho'. Even if he did end up at the scum Wink Not only was he a fine keeper but he ruled the defence with an iron glove (d'yah see wot I did there). I don't remember him having to make many reaction saves 'cos he seemed always in control of what was in front of him. Nice bloke, too. Not that he's a mate or anything...

Who?

Who are you talking about?

If you're talking about Zoff and Yashin, then yes i have seen them play. Obviously not live though.

Also, Shilton is right up with the best ever. Lineker thinks he's the best goal keeper ever.

Out of interest,do people outside of the UK rate Best as one of the best ever?

Because IMO to say that Best was better than Garrincha is crack-talk.

Also who was Belgium's keeper in 1990?He was the bomb.

In my country, Pele, Maradona, Di Stefano, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Platini, Puskas, Garrincha, Eusebio, Van Basten are considered better than him. In fact, I think Best is not very well known here. Don't know why...

A great GK from Belgium was Pfaff, but he played in the 80s.

I think it was a curly-haired fella called Predhomme, or something like that.

Not the same game, iirc. Different incidents. Goikoetxea runs behind Maradona and clearly goes for his leg. Maradona's ankle twists and breaks.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, watching a few clips of players from past decades does not mean you get to have a personal opinion about them. You get to watch EDITED videos and read OTHER PEOPLE's opinions, in order to form your own.

I appreciate lots of the past greats and watched lots of videos of them, but i'd feel weird about telling another poster here that their knowledge of players before the 90s is limited. MY knowledge is limited! Why? Because i haven't seen them live so my opinion counts for [beep!]. And you're even younger than me.

I find it hypocritical and unfortunately you're not the only offender here. Wax poetic about the players you really know, people, don't go saying X was the best of that decade or Y was the best ever when all you have seen are a few old 3-minute clips of them.

Personally, i always try to say that there are players that football culture deems as legends and there are those that i have seen live and i deem as legends. Two separate things. I accept the first, but i can't go around spreading it as gospel. Just me though.

Cheers for that Argentino, looks like "curly-haired" is the understatement of the year!
