Spurs are the team everyone has been talking about all summer. Actually, no, let me re-phrase that. Spurs are the team the biased London based press have been talking about all summer and they seem convinced that they are a rather good side. They are a very good side and I have no qualms about this. However, this is a very winnable game for Everton, even down at the Lane.
Spurs came unstuck up at the Stadium of Light and it is clear they are far from invincible. They have a great looking attack on paper, but behind this there is an underbelly which can be exposed. In my view, we need to go into this one and go straight for the throat. We are Everton and that is the way we should approach all of our games anyway but if we do it here we can get real joy. Berbatov, Keane, Bent and Defoe are all great players, but they cannot do a thing if they don't get the ball and Eveton have more than enough quality in midfield to boss this game. I would go for a 5 man midfield and attempt to starve Spurs of possession in this area. We are a good enough footballing side to do this. If Osman and Arteta can get forward and support Johnson, we can create them more problems than they can create us. What I don't want to see (and to be fair what we rarely do) is go into a game all defensive and trying to sneak a goal. That is what lesser clubs do, not Everton. We play games to win and I hope if we score a goal we will just keep going at them because attack is the best form of defense. Obviously, it will not be easy and once again concentration from all 11 men has to be emphasised for 90 minutes, not 80. However, we can do it. I am not going down to London to watch this one and I shall be listening to the commentary on Merseyside unfortunately. Those of you going make sure you post a full match report on here for me. The press adore Spurs for some reason and it may be difficult to get a fair assessment from them. |

We have an appalling record at White Hart Lane , something like 1 win in the last 20 years , so right now I'd happily accept a point .
I probably shouldn't admit this ........ giving Crabhead too much ammunition against me Back in the early 90's , we were 3 down at half-time and playing badly . My wife ( then girlfriend ) and I discussed whether we should leave and just go and enjoy the delights of London . Fortunately , we stayed , and witnessed a great second half comeback ; Beardsley scored twice and Rhino got the equaliser on debut . |

Now why would I use that as ammunition my friend? |

An absolutely fabulous result down at the Lane. The two things that struck me most about our performance were the class shown in midfield and the hard work from Vic and Johnson up front. Bear in mind I only listened to the radio commentary, but it seemed that every time Everton got possession in midfield, they were cool and never ever gave the ball away cheaply. It also seemed that when we lost the ball, Vic and Johnson kept running back and harrying the Spurs players for it, thus helping out our midfielders. It seems like the team worked really hard and it truly is a great win. I went ballistic whenever we scored. Just a quick word also for Ronnie Goodlass. As a pundit he is biased towards Everton, but it is Radio Merseyside so you expect that. However, he does talk a lot of sense in my view, more than some of the overpaid clowns I see on Sky.
Brilliant three points. |

Good performance ..... 3 points ....... nice start to the season .
Also spent much of the 2nd half singing the "Steven Gerrard - the baby's not yours" song . Guess this isn't going to go away anytime soon Stevie . The derby could be fun . |
