I have been chatting to two German brothers today and we got talking football. I was delighted to learn from them that in Germany, Everton are still a really famous club and seen as one of the big guns of English football. It does worry you at times when our own English media try and relegate us to the role of a secondary Premier League Club. At least fans in Germany recognise that football did not suddenly spring into existence in 1992 and what happened before then was equally as important in defining what makes a football club big.
I genuinely think there are sections of the English media who have not got a clue, and unfortunately these are the clowns who seem to be picking the national team and picking the fool we have as a coach, having got the last coach sacked. I don't know what qualifies the likes of Brian Woolnough and Ian Ridley to spread their rubbish opinions but it is nice to know they have not yet infected the wise football followers of Germany. |

I suspect we're still held in high regard in Germany because the older generation will remember us beating Borussia Munchengladbach in the 1971 European Cup QF .
And of course the over 35's will remember our epic win over an exceptional Bayern Munich side in 1985 . |

Hee, hee, my Dad still talks about THAT Bayern Munich game at Goodison as one of his favourite ever moments in life. Could anyone dig out some footage maybe and get it up in this thread. Wish I had a computer brain to be able to do it.

Gaius , just go and buy the dvd .
For sheer atmosphere it was the most incredible game I've ever been to . Bayern had only brought an official delegation of about 300 , so even the Park End was full of Evertonians ..... the Park End was the away fans end in those days . I have never known a ground to be so full . I started queing on the Gwladys Street at 5:35 p.m , I got through the turnstiles at 7:28 and took my place on the terrace as the 2 captains were tossing the coin in the centre circle . I anticipated the 2nd goal slightly ahead of everyone else and jumped up in celebration , the crowd closed around me , and it took several minutes of wriggling before I was able to get my feet back on the ground , that's how tightly packed we were . Remember this was before Hillsborough , and I don't know what the official attendance was that night , but I bet there were several thousand " extra " in each of the terraced areas that night . We were superb , we battered them , especially in the 2nd half . That season , we did overwhelm teams . Reidy and Brace would win every 50/50 tackle in midfield , get it wide to Sheeds and Sir Trev , Psycho and Gaz would be overlapping from full-back , and we used to swarm forward , leaving Degsy and Ratters to watch the back door . Teams just couldn't cope with the speed , athleticism and sheer numbers of blue shirts pouring towards their goal . That 2nd half , we seemed to be camped in the German half , and it was only a matter of time before we scored . Any win over the RS is sweet ( especially 3-0 ) ; clinching the title gives you a warm feeling ( QPR '85 and Norwich '87 ) ; and I must admit to immense satisfaction at getting revenge against Man Utd in '95 ; but............... for sheer passion , excitement , adrenalin rush , nothing tops Bayern Munich in '85 . |
