I'm planning on going to as many games as I can this year - so it seems I'm going to have to go to Borehamwood a little more often now Smile

Six-point lead
Nearly 2,000 fans were present in Umeå's Gammliavallen home to watch a team who only last week won the Swedish Cup, and they now look good for the domestic double after Lisa Dahlqvist shot them ahead on 55 minutes and Marta wrapped up the victory near the end. With four games to go when the league resumes in October after the FIFA Women's World Cup, Umeå lead new second-placed team Djurgårdens IF by six points. Another league title would seal Umeå's 2008/09 UEFA Women's Cup berth, but before that last season's runners-up prepare to bid for an unprecedented third European crown this term when they stage second qualifying round Group B2 against WFC Rossiyanka, CFF Cljuana and Universitet Vitebsk from 11-16 October.

Arsenal in form
The team that beat Umeå in the 2006/07 final, Arsenal LFC, are yet to begin the defence of their FA Women's Premier League title but look in ominous form. In their first pre-season friendly they secured a 12-0 victory against Sheffield FC as part of the world oldest football club’s 150th anniversary celebrations, and then on Thursday they welcomed Wales to Borehamwood and won 6-0 with four goals from Kelly Smith. Arsenal too come into the UEFA Women's Cup on home soil as hosts of Group B1.

Kolbotn ahead
Of the other teams seeded into the second European stage, Kolbotn IL are also late in their summer season and go into the Norwegian league's World Cup break level at the top with Røa IL with four games left. Kolbotn boosted their superior goal difference when they overcame IL Sandviken 5-0 while Røa prevailed 3-0 at Team Strømmen FK. Tomorrow Kolbotn play Arna-Bjørnar Fotball in the Norwegian Cup semi-finals, with Røa meeting Asker DK in the other tie. Meanwhile, three wins in a row have left Kolbotn's second qualifying round Group B4 rivals Brøndby IF on nine points from four games in Denmark, three behind Fortuna Hjørring.

Frankfurt start well
Having reclaimed the Frauen Bundesliga title last season, 1. FFC Frankfurt resumed that form yesterday as they defeated FC Bayern München 5-2 to open the new campaign. Renate Lingor's penalty and Petra Wimbersky's strike gave Frankfurt an early 2-0 lead and although Bayern fought back to equalise, new signing Conny Pohlers, Birgit Prinz and Kerstin Garefrekes wrapped up the win. Another set of games are played next week before the break for the World Cup.

The UEFA Cup is finally back with the second group stage and Arsenal are at home which is nice except for the fact that they have weekday games at 6 pm and 6.30 pm and Saturday game at 12pm Shocked

We should have the usual 18 squad players available including Faye White back from injury after the Wambach elbow incident. Should she be not available, Felicienne Minnaar/ Lizzie Wicks could be called into the squad.

Any game is worth a trip if you have time and money, especially this season as we are a lot weaker defensively.

The new European shirt for the campaign have been distributed to the players, the Arsenal squad should be the following except last minute injuries :

GK : Byrne Spencer
DF : Scott Tracy Champ White Grant Flaherty Asante Phillip Minnaar
MF : Ludlow Chapman Smith
FW : Sanderson Fleeting Yankey Davison Carney

9 defenders 3 midfield and 5 forwards , obviously most of the players can play in 2 or 3 positions

For a change: Emma on the wing, Kaz in goal, Yanks central defence... Very Happy

There is something I really do not understand about those group games is that they play 3 in 6 days, which is an unbearable strain on players body especially as they are not professional. I read recently some reports that say that you need at least 3 days between games fro the body to rest properly as tiredness kicks in 2 days after a game.

They probably get to pay special rates in a hotel if they stay for a week (for visiting teams). Very Happy

And just to remind / inform the ones who are going to Saturday's game, it will kick off at 12 midday and be played at St Albans - not Borehamwood.

Directions here.

I'm driving down with our official forum AFLC photographer Ron, and expect to pick up shlj at the railway station, and also hoping Conn will get to the game.

So, those that know who we are, and haven't yet said hello - please do so at that game. I know that some of you know who we are, even if you like to hide your identities. Laughing

We're all harmless - and if Conn makes it - we'll all have a bodyguard Wink

First official Arsenal home game of the season and it is a UEFA Cup one.
You just wonder who planned the PL games Laughing
Anyway I am very curious to see who will be on the bench today, if julie has come down from Scotland, if Faye is fit again as she has not been on the team sheet yet this season etc...

http://www.Arsenal.com/matchreport.asp?thisNav=fixtures&fxid=331649

Apparently Kelly has a minor groin complaint.
The team could to be this one then

Byrne
Scott -Grant - White (Asante) - Phillip
Carney - Ludlow - Chapman - Yankey
Sanderson - Fleeting

Subs : Spencer Tracy Champ Minnaar Flaherty Asante Davison

Or if they go for full rotation as the big games are saturday and tuesday

Bryne
Scott Tracy White Champ
Carney Flaherty Ludlow Yankey
Sanderson Davison
