So how good are Sweden as a footballing nation in the woman's football?

Wow. That really sucks about Sweden. To technically win a game and a critical one at that, but still get knocked out of the tournament in the pre-quaterfinal stage, because of a goal differential. They were in the frickin' final last go around. I do understand that they're not the same team as they were back in '03 - some key veterans have retired and key players playing injured or just barely recovered from some serious injuries.

Not good enough for the quarter finals
They have a good reputation though, and there will be those (Smog, where are you?) that will tell you about how good they are  |

They are last World Cup runners-up, they have been the European Championship runners-up too, and they are ranked 3rd in the world. Unfortunatelly their huge star Malin Mostrom has retired, and a few key players, for example world class goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson, as well as a promissing young forward, Josefine Oqvist had to stay home due to injuries. Their current no.1 goalie Hedvig Lindahl and their best forward Hanna Ljungberg just came back from injuries too and were not fully fit and prepared for this WC. I disagree with what twmcat said - "Not good enough for the quarter finals". They are good enough to be the Champions there, they were just extremelly unlucky recently with all the injuries and everything. If the World Cup was next year or a year ago, I'm sure you'd see them in the final again  |
