The Reserves suffered their first league defeat of the season despite matching an experienced Sunderland side in an entertaining contest at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Gary Ablett's men dominated for long spells throughout the match but were left to rue a series of missed opportunities as a first-half strike from Roy O'Donovan ensured the visitors left with all three points.

A lively opening saw the Reds take charge with Ray Putterill curling an effort just over the bar on five minutes before Jordy Brouwer was harshly robbed of what would have been his third goal in two league games.

The Dutch starlet rose well to head home Stephen Darby's cross from the right on 18 minutes but his celebrations were cut short by the sight of the Assistant Referee's flag.

The Reds continued to take the game to their more experienced opponents and were unlucky not to be rewarded for some fine approach play by the likes of Brouwer and Craig Lindfield.

The visitors had been restricted to just a handful of set pieces but on 33 minutes they swept forward and took the lead against the run of play.

A through ball by former Man City midfielder Kiki Musampa found Anthony Stokes and as the Reds defence closed him down the ball broke to Roy O'Donovan who rounded David Martin before firing the ball in from a tight angle.

The goal seemed to boost the away side and they could and should have doubled their advantage but Stokes headed over when well placed while David Connolly was brilliantly denied by Martin.

The second period began in the similar fashion with Connolly again finding space in the box but once more he was denied by the agility of the Liverpool keeper.

The save seemed to spur Ablett's side on and they went on to dominate the remainder of the match.
Emiliano Insua was unlucky to see his 30-yard thunderbolt crash against the underside of the crossbar on 61 minutes before Jay Spearing saw his close range effort superbly blocked by Trevor Carson after some good approach play by Lindifeld.

The Reds continued to push in the latter stages and Brouwer could have salvaged a point with ten minutes remaining but he headed over with the goal at his mercy.

Teams: Liverpool Reserves: Martin, Darby, Insua, San Jose, Huth, Spearing, Flynn (Threlfall 82), Plessis, Lindfield (Pourie 83), Brouwer, Putterill (Crowther 69)

Sunderland Reserves: Carson, Halford, Harte, Hartley, Donoghue, Chandler (Dennehy), O'Donovan (Weir), Musampa, Stokes, Connolly, Murphy (Richardson)

Referee: Mr M Haywood

Attendance: 3,403

Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the Match: Jay Spearing: A solid display by the youngster who more than matched Kiki Musampa in the middle of the park.

Ive just got back from the game . Not a bad performance. There wasnt much experience, but they did ok. I think Musampa showed quality and experience for Sunderland in midfield, I wasnt too impressed with Ian Harte though. I would give any of them contract.

Plessis did well, he looked composed in midfield. It's pitty Insua's great effort that hit the bar didn't go in, he performed well down the left tonight.

I was impressed with the turn-out from my home town, 3,403 for a reserve game is excellent! They even had to open another stand. the stadium might have to open the other stands for the Everton and United matches.

We play Newcastle tonight and Harry Kewell is playing! I'll be going down to watch it so i'll tell you all how he got on. Another familiar in face the team is Leto and i'm looking forward to seeing him in action, he played well in the United game which we should have won but drew 1-1. Here's the team

David Martin
Stephen Darby (captain)
Emiliano Insua
Martin Kelly
Ronald Huth
Damien Plessis
Nabil El Zhar
Jay Spearing
Craig Lindfield
Harry Kewell
Sebastian Leto

Subs':

Jordy Brouwer
Dean Bouzanis
Daniel Pachecho
Mikel San Jose
Ray Putterill.

Ameobi and Babayaro should be playing for Newcastle.

The next game at home is the 13th of November against Blackburn Benster.

Good performance tonight from the young Reds, and one older Red who put in a good performance. Yes I'm talking about Harry Kewell. We couldnt have asked for much more than what he did in the 45 minutes that he had, He started off by showing some good touches, then he had a few shots on goal and scored with a thundering header! He also linked up well with the players around him like El Zhar, Craig Lindfield and Leto. It was surprising to not see him come out for the second half but when I thought about it he was doing alot of puffing and panting after a few of the moves that he was involved in finished, It's hardly surprising with it being his first game since August. A good performance from Harry but I feel he needs more time to get his fitness back, I can't see him being involved in the Arsenal game on Sunday. It's great to see him back though!

There was some other good displays on the night also, Sebastian Leto showed what a skillful player he is again, at one point he went past about five Newcastle players but couldnt produce the finish. it's just a pitty he can't project that into his game when he's playing for the first team, I'm sure that will come in time though. A mention for Damien Plessis aswell, I don't think ive seen a player that is so young and has so much composure in his game, he just doesnt seem to panic.

Jordy Brouwer came on at half time and played well, he got a well deserved goal from a Robinson-like mistake by Forster in the Newcastle goal. Brouwer went off near the end though, I hope that isnt too serious.

I'll watch the replay of th game on LFC TV tomorrow to see if there's anything ive missed out but it was a good win for the reserves.

3-0! Very Happy Laughing

Well done the young reds, they controlled most of the game and there was some neat passing. I was very impressed with Nemeth, he looks to be a decent striker with good movement on and off the ball. The first goal he scored was excellent the way he held the ball up turned then shot. Leto didn't have his best game for the reserves but he still beat the Everton defenders with ease on a few occasions. El Zhar did well and was a constant threat, I'm really liking this guy with every game I see him play, great cross for Nemeths second goal.

As for Everton they were pretty poor, and how did Andy Van der Meyde every play for Inter Milan? He was shite! He must like the English life-style or just enjoy raking in his wages each week at Everton because otherwise I can't understand why he's still there. And the way he went off trying to make out he was injured when he seen his number up was laughable. You about Bluey? How much did you pay for him? or was he a free transfer?
