Police chief Dave McLuckie has called for Italian side Roma to be banned from European competition after violence erupted outside the Stadio Olimpico yet again.

Roma drew 1-1 with Manchester United in Wednesday's Champions League encounter, but it was yet again clashes outside the stadium that hit the headlines.

In the latest piece of what is sadly a very long list of football-related violence in Italy, five Manchester United fans were stabbed as fighting broke out before yesterday's game.

18 English supporters also needed hospital treatment in April after Roma and United supporters came together on the terraces outside the Stadio Olimpico, while three Middlesbrough fans were stabbed and countless others injured following trouble at a Uefa Cup match in 2006.

Throw Roma Out

Violence has also been widespread across Italy in Serie A in recent seasons. The Italian authorities have taken the decision to ban away supporters from domestic games, but Councillor McLuckie of the Cleveland Police Authority thinks Uefa ought to go one stage further and chuck Roma out of Europe altogether.

"Roma should be banned from these competitions," he said on Thursday. "They should not be allowed to enter from the start because the authorities are not able to look after the people who come to their city to watch football.

"They should just be banned from European football. They should not be involved in the Champions League or the UEFA Cup, and that should be the case until they clean up their act."

Poor Policing

McLuckie highlighted as a particular worry the way the Italian police handle supporters at games, something that could be particularly hazardous given that the Olimpico is scheduled to host the Champions League final in 2009.

After the Heysel tragedy, English clubs were given a 5-year ban from European competition, something McLuckie believes was pivotal in helping British police successfully tackle their hooliganism problem. "We are the experts, sadly, because we needed to be.

"We have a real grip on this kind of thing and I know the British police would be happy to give the Italian authorities any help they require in tackling this issue. At the end of the day, the authorities in Rome have failed to keep control of these fans time after time after time, and the Italian authorities as a whole must get in there.

"Here in this country, we do raids on known hooligans before away matches and before big international matches and we stop those individuals travelling. They must be more proactive in the way they deal with football hooliganism. When people travel to Rome, they don't expect to be attacked and they certainly don't expect to be stabbed, but this is becoming the norm.

Deaths Could Follow

"I wouldn't go back there," he added of the Italian capital. "I love football and I have travelled all over to watch it, but I wouldn't go back to the place. The very least you are going to get is a beating - and to try to stem some of the problems, the authorities take the away fans and treat them worse than animals. I am absolutely astounded that so far no-one is dead - but it will not be long before it happens.

Italian Authorities Must Act

"A few weeks ago when the police officer accidentally shot a fan, they rioted in the streets as if they were saying, 'We will do what we want and how dare you try to stop us and kill one of us?' Until the authorities make a real crackdown on the people responsible instead of allowing them to riot in the streets as they did a short few weeks ago and take control of their city, this is going to happen time and time again. It is not the Rome authorities who need to do this, it is the Italian authorities from the very top who need to address this situation now."

So why ban Roma from European competions, just don't let the away supporters go to the stadium Rolling Eyes

it won't be fair for a club to be banned due to their supporters attitude ~
maybe those troubled supporters should be noted and banned instead -.-+
like what happened when celtic played against milan and a supporter ran onto the pitch ~ he's banned to attend the footie stadium eversince ~

And what about those Inter fans who threw thousands of lights (Roman lights in Danish) onto the pitch in the CL match against Milan?? Inter only had to play two or three European home games without fans..

And around the millenium, some English football supporter were killed in Istanbul (was he a Leeds supporter?).. I dont think any Turkish team was banned from Europe on that ocation...

Banning the team itself is a bit too drastic but if the fans do not end this nonsense quickly then they truly deserve to banned from away games or others. This is now just getting ridiculous; you cannot enjoy a good game without the fear of getting hurt or killed.
