Actually if it wasn't a WC year I think Kelly Smith would have won, or at least gotten second to Marta. She was successful in her international appearances, and everyone knows her name. But the WWC gives the coaches and players who vote on this thing tunnel vision on who to focus on so people completely forget about club success, which was what made Smith's year so impressive.

I'm OT here - but why did Arsenal ladies not win the Sports team of the year, in UK?
They won every trophy and didn't lose a game. But, BBC gave it to English RU team who came second in a tournament. |

Everybody speaks well of Marta. Personally I find that sometimes she misses professionalism and adopts violent behavior. At first there was the behavior with Brigit Prinz during finale of the Europe Cup (Frankfort FC vs Umea IK), then recently during a match Umea IK FC Malm ö ( June 11th of this year ), Marta was very aggressive to a défenser player opponent Emma Wilhemsson: Marta would have given him the kicks in the stomach (eh yes many several kicks). Captain Nilla Fischer of the FC Malmo would have even tried to calm Marta by speaking to him slowly. Verdict red card to Marta and 3 matches of suspension by the Swedish Federation. Thus Marta was suspended. His gesture was unforgivable. Marta struck with his fist repeatedly a player. I don't like Marta , think she's a dirty player but I do give her respect when it's warranted ( although that's through gritted teeth
