FLEETS WINS A TOP AWARD

Scotland Captain Julie Fleeting has been awarded the Sports Personality Of The Year at this years Field Trust Awards ceremony , formerly the Playing Fields Association.

Julie joins an elite group of sports men and women to receive this award. Past winners include racing driver Jackie Stewart , sprinter Lee McConnell , snooker player Stephen Hendry and ex-Scotland managers Andy Rorburgh and Craig Brown.

Julie was given the award in recognition of her achievements reaching 100 international caps and goals for Scotland and was praised as being a fantastic role model for young people.

Well done to Fleets for winning that award. Good to see the Scots aren't afraid to award their sports personality awards to women footballers Wink

Fleeting ready for Ukraine battle

Scotland striker Julie Fleeting says she is relishing the prospect of facing Ukraine in the crucial European Championship game at McDiarmid Park.

The Scots need victory to keep alive their hopes of reaching the finals and Fleeting said the player's were confident of securing three points.

"We let ourselves down earlier in te campaign but have played well in the last few games " , she told BBC sport.

" We need to beat Ukraine and I'm confident we can ".

Scotland sit third in group 5 , five points behind Ukraine and eight behind group leaders Denmark.

Victory for Anna Signuel's side in Perth would keep alive their play-off hopes and Fleeting , who is recovering from a metatarsal injury , said she was determined to play her part.

" I've been struggling with injury for three months. But I played against Portugal ", the 28 year old said.

" The Scotland squad met on Monday and it's going well.

Ukraine play with two fast wingers , but if you want to qualify for major championships then you have to beat the best and we're confident of doing that ".

Fleeting said the current Scotland side is one of the best she has been involved in at international level , with a great blend of youth and experience.

" Our midfield is strong. Kim Little is an exciting young player and our defence is good with Chelley Kerr holding it together at the back.

We've also got Jennie Beattie , who scored against Portugal , who has come up from Under 19s ".

Scotland coach Signuel said the Ukraine encounter was one of the most crucial her side face in the past four years.

And Fleeting said the players were no doubt about the importance of the clash.

" The coach won't have to fire anyone up. Wearing the Scotland shirt is enough to do tht , but this game will be extra special ".

Fleeting said she would love to play for Scotland at a major finals before hanging her boots.

"I would love to represent Scotland at a major championship " , she added.

"I've got a few years left in my career and I'm determined to wear the Scotland shirt at a finals ".

Looking beyond Wednesday's game , Fleeting said she was content at Arsenal and hoped to continue playing for the London club next season.

" I don't like to think too far ahead , I'm enjoying my time at Arsenal and working with a great coach ", she added.

"I'm looking forward to next season and I've always said I will continue to play for as long as I enjoy it.

I live and work in Ayrshire , and my husband works here too and I fly down for Arsenal games at the weekend ".

Fleeting said morale in the Scotland squad was high , adding "If you aren't playing well , there are another 10 players in the side to compensate.

We're just all looking forward to the game ".

I hope Fleets gets a chance to compete in the Euro's or a world cup. She a very talented player and deserves to play at the highest level in major tournament's.
