Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has defended his club's lack of activity during the January transfer window.

The Eagles were relegated from the Barclays Premiership after finishing a point adrift of West Brom, with suggestions manager Iain Dowie should have bolstered his squad during the campaign.

"I went after players through my management staff," Jordan told radio station BBC London. "I went for these signings in earnest and with the backing of my management staff."

"We gave Crewe an offer of £3million for Dean Ashton but for some reason (Crewe manager) Dario Gradi advised him to join Norwich," he added.

"We believed we had a deal for Igor Biscan but he was then named in Liverpool's Champions League team.

"We agreed a fee for Neil Clement but he used our offer as leverage to get a long-term deal at West Brom."

Jordan also revealed a move for West Ham striker Bobby Zamora was denied as the player received death threats because he once played for rivals Brighton.

"We also wanted Bobby Zamora but the player received death threats," Jordan added.
