Ajax dropped two vital points in their challenge for the Eredivisie title after being held to a 2-2 draw by Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday.
Mads Junker gave the hosts an early lead before goals from Urby Emanuelson and Luis Suarez handed Ajax the advantage. Harrie Gommans grabbed an equaliser for Vitesse, however, to leave their opponents five points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven, who saw off Excelsior on Saturday. The Amsterdam club found themselves on the back foot after eight minutes when Junker sprinted on to Remco van der Schaaf's pass before driving the ball home from 10 yards out. The blow brought the visitors to life but Suarez steered his 14-yard strike too high before Gabri mis-hit Kenneth Perez's cross wide of the mark. Ajax continued to push forward and Johnny Heitinga looked to have restored parity in the 37th minute until goalkeeper Piet Velthuizen made a last-ditch intervention. Gommans tried to create some breathing space for Vitesse shortly before the interval but he also drove wide of the post with Maarten Stekelenburg beaten. And the miss came back to haunt him seconds after the restart when Emanuelson levelled matters with a 20-yard bullet which caught Velthuizen off guard. Four minutes later Ajax found themselves ahead with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar providing the lay-off for Suarez to turn home. The lead lasted just six minutes though as Gommans made amends for his earlier miss with a close-range effort which this time found a way past Stekelenburg and into the bottom left corner. Ajax almost retook the lead in the 70th minute but Huntelaar's powerful strike was denied by an agile Velthuizen save. And Vitesse could have sneaked a win in the final minutes of the match but Theo Janssen's 12-yard volley finished narrowly wide. |

A tense battle between Feyenoord and fellow title hopefuls FC Groningen at De Kuip finished with honours even from a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
Marcus Berg had opened the scoring for the visitors shortly after the half-hour mark but a Mark-Jan Fledderus own goal before the break allowed Feyenoord to level matters. The teams remain locked in the Eredivisie on 40 points, five behind leaders PSV Eindhoven, with Feyenoord holding the edge by virtue of a better goal difference. Groningen made the brighter start in Rotterdam and home goalkeeper Henk Timmer was called upon to make an early save from Goran Lovre's low drive. The hosts then sent out their own warning when Roy Makaay set up Andwele Slory with a chested pass which the striker pulled wide. But it was Groningen who took the lead after 32 minutes when Berg scored with a simple tap-in after Timmer had parried Erik Nevland's effort into the path of the Swedish striker. The goal sparked an immediate response from Feyenoord and visiting keeper Brian van Loo kept his side in front with two stunning saves from Nicky Hofs and Jonathan De Guzman. There was little van Loo could do to prevent the equaliser when it arrived however, with de Guzman sending a teasing cross into the area which Fledderus headed beyond his own keeper on the stroke of half-time. Feyenoord were also the stronger team after the restart and new signing Denny Landzaat, who moved to Rotterdam from Wigan earlier in the week, tried his luck with a 25-yard bullet which flew past the left post. Van Loo made another good save to deny Serginho Greene's header before De Guzman missed the chance to put the hosts in front when he missed from two yards out after a neat pass from Michael Mols. Groningen weathered the storm well though and almost snatched it at the death through substitute Stefan Nijland, who saw his drive stopped by Timmer's acrobatics. results of today: NEC-FC Utrecht 2-0 Vitesse- Ajax 2-2 VVV-Venlo-Heracles Almelo 0-5 Feyenoord- fc Groningen 1-1 Fc Twente-Sparta Rotterdam 1-2 |

Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven face a tough test at home to free-scoring Heerenveen while the league's bottom four all go head-to-head this weekend.
PSV are eight points clear at the top after their 2-0 win at AZ Alkmaar last weekend, however they will host a Heerenveen side who have won their past four matches including a 7-0 home drubbing of Vitesse last week. Despite the loss of Brazilian striker Afonso Alves to Middlesbrough, Heerenveen continue to knock in the goals with 20-year-old American midfielder Michael Bradley leading the way with 12 in 21 league games. Gertjan Verbeek's side have scored 19 goals in their previous four fixtures, conceding just once in the process - although all four games were against teams in the bottom half of the table. PSV's form has been even more impressive having gone two months without dropping a point at home, while they have also also picked up vital wins against title rivals Ajax and Feyenoord. Ajax will need to take all three points from their early game at Roda JC on Sunday to keep in touch with the leaders. The Amsterdammers bounced back from their 2-0 defeat to PSV on January 30 with a 3-0 win at home to Feyenoord last week, but with Heerenveen just a point behind them the pressure is mounting. And Ajax coach Adrie Koster believes last week's win over Feyenoord has helped his team turn their fortunes around, saying: "We kept the gap with PSV from getting wider. This gives us a lot of confidence." Feyenoord will be aiming to keep in touch with the leaders on Saturday when they travel to 12th-placed De Graafschap - a team that have won just once in their past seven games. The Rotterdammers' coach was left fuming at the defeat in Amsterdam and is keen for his side to return to winning ways. "I have never experienced anything like it," he said. "We were humiliated." At the other end of the table, basement boys Excelsior travel to fourth-bottom Sparta Rotterdam. Excelsior caused an upset in January when they beat Feyenoord 2-1 at home, but have failed to win a game since then. Victory could see them make up ground on fellow strugglers VVV and Willem II, who meet on Sunday. In the other games, FC Twente host Heracles in a mid-table clash on Friday, while NAC Breda will look to extend their winning sequence to six games against FC Utrecht. FC Groningen are just three points behind second-placed Ajax and travel to Vitesse Arnhem. In the final game on Sunday sees NEC Nijmegen host AZ Alkmaar. |

Ajax slip up |
|
Looks like Ajax are going to struggle to overtake PSV again this year.
Was convinced they were going to pull two points back rather than fall another point behind with that defeat. I am now not even sure that they are going to be able to make second place there own |

Also we had a belgium referee (what is already really crazy cause Limburg is close to belgium. Roda had to get 2 red cards, and the ref had to give us the 2 goals we made and also the 2 penalty's. even the commentator said it. Oh well next week new chance!!! |
