Sheffield FC to play Dutch super-club |
|
The world’s first football club are set to take on one of the most decorated clubs in European history.
Sheffield FC have agreed a prestigious friendly with Dutch giants AFC Ajax at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium on April 13. The game follows on from Club’s 150th anniversary celebrations last year, which included a match against Italian champions Inter Milan, watched by more than 18,000 fans. Ajax have picked up 29 Eredivisie titles and are one of only five teams to have earned the right to keep the European Cup, winning the prestigious trophy on four occasions. The club is also famous for its renowned youth programme that has produced many great footballers, including the likes of Johan Cruyff, Frank Rijkaard and Dennis Bergkamp. Ajax are expected to bring a big squad to Bramall Lane, the world’s oldest professional football ground, with a number of players gaining international honours at youth level. The game also forms an opportunity for Sheffield United to confirm their relationship with the Ajax youth setup, as well as the Blades’ growing support of Sheffield FC. Sheffield FC manager Dave McCarthy said: “Ajax are a European super-club who have produced some of the best players the world has ever seen, and it is an honour to be playing them. “This will be a fantastic occasion for all football fans and we hope the Sheffield public will again turn out in their thousands. It will be an opportunity to watch one of the most talented young sides in the world at the moment and witness some of the up and coming stars of European football.” Simon Argall, operations director at Sheffield United PLC, added: “We are pleased to again host another game to celebrate the anniversary of Sheffield FC. Sheffield United have formed close links with Ajax and their youth programme in recent years, with both clubs sharing knowledge in the development of players. “This game will therefore provide everyone an opportunity to strengthen that partnership. Hopefully we will see more celebratory fixtures with high-profile European clubs here in the future.” Anyone purchasing a Blades match ticket between now and April 13 will receive a free concession voucher for the Ajax match. I got this from the official sheffield website. -x- |
