I'd like to see Saints go through, but think they may well slip up - surprise 2-1 to Rovers.

Coming up to twenty five minutes gone, and a fairly dull and cagey opening has seen Southampton really struggling to get any movement together at all with the ball and i can only recall them having the ball around the Rovers area literally about once or twice. Rovers are certainly having the best share if possession and have had two or three half chances through Lambert and captain Craig Disley, but the score remains 0-0 in a scrappy game.

A fairly poor game which saw what was an embarrassing performance from Southampton. They could not create anything, consistently gave the ball away and many of their players did not show for the ball and support their teammates time and time again. They were a tad more purposeful in the Second Half after what was a woeful, woeful first half performance, but the spark virtually fizzled out when Dodd and Gorman took off the only strong Saint influence on the game, Spanish midfielder Inigo Idiakez. Rovers were far from class themselves, but they pressured the Saints magnificently on the ball, particularly unsettling the likes of Jason Euell and Jon Viafara and would have been comfortably ahead far earlier in this game if it weren't for a solid effort from Kelvin Davis in the Soton goal.
There eventual goal, coming in around seven minutes from the end of normal time, saw a Rickie Lambert free kick take a huge deflection off left back Jermaine Wright and sail past a helpless Davis into the back of the net. Man of the Match for me in a relatively dull game was the 'goalscorer' Rickie Lambert up front for Rovers, who constantly threatened particularly in the air and he could have had two or three today. |
