Chelsea boss Avram Grant has set up a £12million summer deal for Croatian midfielder Luka Modric - casting doubt over Frank Lampard's future at Stamford Bridge.

Grant has gone back for Dynamo Zagreb playmaker Modric, 22, to beat off competition from other top European clubs.

The Croatia star has emerged as one of Europe's most wanted talents after impressing in his nation's Euro 2008 qualification campaign as he helped knock out England.

Modric had offers in January but decided to stay put. Chelsea's fresh approach is likely to succeed at the end of the season.

That could raise doubts over England midfielder Lampard's future as he is already sweating on his place for the Carling Cup Final with Tottenham on Sunday.

Lampard has been stalling on signing a new contract and his Chelsea deal expires in 18 months' time. He has been critical of Grant's rotation policy after being axed for the Champions League draw with Olympiacos this week.

But Lampard insists he wants to stay despite facing competition for his place for the first time in his Chelsea career from German midfielder Michael Ballack.

I guess he can take his pick...but he did say that Barcelona would be of most interest. Apparently rejected Arsenal as he wanted to stay in Croatia for a bit.
Looks like Chelsea or Barca for Luka Modric. Very Happy

Come to England Luka!

He didn't reject Arsenal nor any other team that might have made a bid for him. Dynamo Zagreb actually put a block on his 'possible' move during the January transfer period. Modric came out and expressed his dissatisfaction that Dynamo Zagreb blocked his move.

He has expressed his desire to play for Barca and said he would rather play in Spain.

Ye agreed doubt he wanted a move to Arsenal when they were intrested thou too much competition to hold down a regular first team place.

Wherever he goes i hope his rapid development continues.

He's an excellent young talent by the looks of things, and i think he is set for a big future.

I don't understand why Chelsea want him. They already have too many quality centre midfielders, and selling Lampard would be suicidal for Grant. The Chelsea fans would not be happy - he would get crucified.

I don't know why Modric would want to go there - or Barca for that matter.

Chelsea have Mikel, Ballack, Makelele, Lampard, Essien etc. and Barca have Iniesta, Xavi, Deco, Yaya Toure, Ronaldinho etc.

Cheslea or Barcelona

i would have thought Modric would want to go to a club where he would be a certainty to play.

At the moment I would say Barcelona would look the better option, whilst there is competition for places, it doesn't appear as great as at Chelsea

I don't know if you're being serious, or just joking because you're a Spurs fan - but i would say Tottenham would be one of the best possible options for him. He is exactly the type of player they need, and i think they are going places.

Spurs should be doing everything they can to sign either Modric, Moutinho or Nasri.

There's been lots of rumors lately that Deco will be leaving in the summer. And we all know the rumors that have been floating for a good year and a half or so about Ronaldinho.

He could be backup for Hartley at Celtic if he wants Rolling Eyes

I reckon that Arsenal would be a great place for him to develop. As much as I would like him at Chelsea,he would become a top footballer at Arsenal. He would learn this one-two touch football that the Gunners play and the idea of Fabregas and Modric in the same team is...i'd like to say mouthwatering but that seems gay.....it seems like a nice idea.

But i don't see how he would fit in. You need a defensive midfielder, and Flamini has been immense this season. He also has a great partnership going with Fabregas.
