Newcastle have agree a £6m fee for Alan Smith .

Newcastle United have confirmed they have agreed a fee with Manchester United for striker Alan Smith.

Newcastle are currently in talks with the 26-year-old, who has been linked to a host of Premiership clubs including north-east rivals Middlesbrough and Sunderland, as well as the likes of Everton and Tottenham.

The striker signed for Manchester United from Leeds for £7m three years ago. He battled back from a broken leg to play last season but the offer of a new deal at Old Trafford has not materialised.

Smith could be making his Newcastle debut alongside former Leeds team-mate Mark Viduka in a pre-season friendly against Sampdoria on Sunday.

I think Smith is a good player and he puts in 100% effort every game.

he puts in the effort every game, tries his hardest always. but nothing shows for it. no goals, no-one seems to notice he's played well apart from toon fans.
