Faltering Bundesliga champions Stuttgart's season reached a new low as they were dumped out of the DFB-Pokal by second division strugglers Carl-Zeiss Jena on Tuesday night.

Antonio Da Silva's miss in a penalty shoot-out saw last season's finalists eliminated at the quarter-final stage, with the visitors converting all five spot-kicks to reach the last four for the first time in their history.

The game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes. Tobias Werner shocked the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium by putting the guests ahead in the 32nd minute but Mario Gomez forced extra-time with an equaliser nine minutes from the end.

He then put Armin Veh's side ahead in the fourth minute of extra-time, before Robert Muller equalised with the last kick of the game.

In Tuesday's other quarter-final, Borussia Dortmund went a step closer to a return to European football by ending the hopes of Hoffenheim with a 3-1 win.

Thomas Doll's side saw off the ambitious second division side, largely thanks to two goals in three minutes from Giovanni Federico (20) and Tinga (23).

Francisco Copado did pull a goal back for Hoffenheim from the penalty spot in the 38th minute. Despite that, the result was rarely in any doubt and Mladen Petric sealed matters 10 minutes into the second half.

The remaining two quarter-finals take place on Wednesday. The Allianz Arena will host the Munich derby between Bayern and 1860, while Hamburg travel to Wolfsburg.

What's happened to Stuttgart this season, they go from Champions one season and now 9 months later look where they are.

Yeah. Wonderful, fantastic goal by Rafael van der Vaart to the 1-1 in the meantime. Hamburger SV was very unlucky in make use of chances to shot a goal. I hope Borussia Dortmund plays in the 1/2-Final at home against VfL Wolfsburg or Carl-Zeiss Jena. Than we have a realistic chance to move to the final in Berlin! Laughing

Semifinals:

Borussia Dortmund - FC Carl Zeiss Jena
FC Bayern Munich - VFL Wolfsburg

As much as i like surprises from lower level clubs, i hope Dortmund wins against jena. I dont want Jena in the UEFA Cup next season. That would only hurt the UEFA country ranking...

Good draw for Dortmund, great chance for them to make Europe now. What division are Jena in?

How did they manage to get this far?! Should be easy for Dortmund but you just never know what could happen in a cup tie

In the next round of the DFB-Pokal we have to play against Carl-Zeiss Jena at home. Everybody who likes Dortmund is enthusiatic, but Jena is not for free in the half final Embarassed
Let's hope we will win Very Happy

Good luck to you! Ive never even heard of them but im sure if Dortmund play anyway decent they should win.

Bayern will be favourites to beat Wolfsberg as well so it should be an interesting final if everything works out
