Very much deserved if you ask me. He is a fantastic player. You cant argue with how good he has been this season. i think he has worked hard to cut out the mistakes and his game has benefited.

When ever he is United captain he has always seemed to do well.

What does everyone else think?

sorry if this is somewhere else but i couldnt see it.

It's in the France v England thread. I don't think he's the enw captain though. Capello has said he's going to use several different captains before qualifying starts so can see it being someone else in the next friendly. John Terry will be captain come the important games

Good choice. But in the end, I think it'll go back to Gerrard when it really matters.

dam it, cheers again.

Yer, i know he is only temporary captain, i was just wondering what people thought of his appointment. I would quite happily see him take over from John Terry full time. I dont think Stevie G has proved worthy of it recently, plus Gerrard plays better without it i reckon. So Rio i think would lead by example well and do a good job full time.

Big Rio deserves the armband on recent performances.

I am normally a JT backer but I think he is losing his touch & leadership skills...losing a Cup final obviously didn't do much for his morale.

Interesting choice, not sure if it will be a permanent one.

I'd guess most people would be saying stick with JT, but Rio has had a bigger presence I think this season, and his new found leadership is deserved.

He seems to be in great form of late, yet I'm not convinced as to his leadership and general captain skills.

Anyone is better than Terry though i concede.

I think it is a great choice, and it would be my choice for England Captain every day of the week. You need a player who can be a leader, lead by example, and also someone that is always going to be on the teamsheet when fit. Rio fits that bill!

I heard a lot of people slating this choice of captain on the radio this afternoon. I think it's a good choice , he's been brilliant for Utd this season and when he's captained the Utd side he's done it with authority. You never see him spitting the dummy.

I hate the Runt.

But I guess he deserves his chance, he's done well this season. I agree with The Jinx, John Terry started believing the hype around himself and now he thinks he's big-time. Once a player does that he can lose his way a bit and his leadership skills have suffered.

Agreed.

I'd normally say JT too but his constant moaning and disrespect of officials recently have put me off him. Rio does like a whinge now and again but not on the scale JT does.

He deserves his chance.

The captain of a football team doesn't have to do much other than call heads and tails , it's not like cricket where you're constantly making decisions .

Other than that , I've always thought the captain should be certain of his place , and if I was the England manager Rio wouldn't fall into that category . He's too much like David James , in that although capable of brilliant displays , too frequently he makes a careless mistake .

i've always wished to see a defender be the captain.. and i can't think of a better one than him at the moment.. he's been showing decent and stable performance in his club so far..

and i like the way he yells at any day-dreaming players on the pitch during a match.. lol..

Rio next new England Captain
