Celtic players Aiden McGeady, Scott McDonald and Barry Robson have been shortlisted for the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award.

The fourth player to complete the candidate list is Rangers' Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar.

McGeady has also been included in the young player of the year category.

He is joined by Falkirk midfielder Scott Arfield, Hibernian forward Steven Fletcher, Motherwell's Ross McCormack and Dundee midfielder Kevin McDonald.

Every footballer affiliated to the Professional Footballers' Association Scotland is eligible to vote, with the winners to be announced on 20 April.

"This is the top award for players," said PFA Scotland chief executive Fraser Wishart.

"There is no greater honour in football than to be voted the best player in your country by your fellow professionals."

The PFA Scotland took over this season from the Scottish Professional Footballers' Association as the country's union for football players.

Last year's winner was Celtic's Japanese international midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura.

The young player award went to Steven Naismith, then of Kilmarnock

That will probably be the case. I'd go: 1. Cuellar 2. McGeady 3. Robson
Youth: 1. McGeady 2. Fletcher 3. McCormack

Needs to find some form again relatively quickly though, he's looked tired and generally very poor of late.

True, but I think this is the heaviest schedule of football he would've played in one season and it's definitely taking its toll. Champions League games, the 5 or so Asian Cup games amongst all the friendlies and Intl training camps (in extreme conditions) and the two World Cup Qualifiers recently (one travelling all the way back to Australia for the game).

Celtic winger Aiden McGeady has followed in the footsteps of former team-mate Shaun Maloney by landing PFA Scotland's SPL Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.

The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland international matched the achievement of Maloney, who achieved the feat two years ago, becoming the first player to do the double.

McGeady has had an outstanding season for Celtic, who lead the Clydesdale Bank Premier League by two points from Rangers.

Rangers defender Carlos Cuellar had been strongly fancied to win the SPL player award but lost out to McGeady at the presentations dinner in Glasgow.

Maloney won both top awards while at Celtic, before his move to Aston Villa.

There were three Celtic players in contention for the top award this time, with Scott McDonald and Barry Robson also on the four-man shortlist.

For the young player prize, McGeady finished ahead of Hibernian's Steven Fletcher, Falkirk's Scott Arfield, Kevin McDonald of Dundee and Motherwell's Ross McCormack.

Hamilton boss Billy Reid was named manager of the year, as Rangers finished empty-handed at the awards.

Rangers manager Walter Smith was a strong contender for the award, with his team in the hunt for three more trophies to add to their CIS Insurance Cup triumph.
