Man Utd 2 Roma 1 (Man Utd 4 Roma 1 on agg)

I'm expecting Totti to be back from injury for Roma and predicting he will score but United will be too much of a handful for the Roma defence at Old Trafford, Rooney and Ronaldo to repeat their double act in Rome.

Unfortunately Totti won't be playing this one either, he announced it a couple of days ago Crying or Very sad

Another tough task for us without our captain, I expect Roma to play with the heart seeing what will happen, an early goal could give us a boost but I think it's more likely Man U will score first and kill what is left to kill of this match

If Ferdinand misses the match i'll go with 2-1 to Roma. Can't see them knocking United out though.

Deja Vu - Taken from a BBC editorial piece from April 2007

Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United face an "injury crisis of major proportions" after Rio Ferdinand went off injured against Middlesbrough. The defender will be out for two weeks after suffering a recurrence of a groin injury during United's 1-1 home draw. Ferdinand will miss the Champions League semi-final against AC Milan on Tuesday but might return for the vital Premiership game with Chelsea on 9 May.

"I'm only playing with 12 players now, the rest are injured," said Ferguson.

"It's an injury crisis of major proportions. We've got to patch up a team for this massive game on Tuesday now."

Ferdinand joined defender Nemanja Vidic (collarbone), captain Gary Neville (ankle), midfielder Park Ji-sung (knee) and forward Louis Saha (hamstring) on the sidelines.

Kieran Richardson is also an injury doubt after going off at half-time against Middlesbrough after scoring United's goal.

United, whose Premiership lead could be cut to one point if Chelsea win at Newcastle on Sunday, face a crucial few weeks as they chase three trophies.

Ferguson blamed Ferdinand's injury for Boro's equalising goal, saying the England defender was physicially unable to stop Mark Viduka heading home on the stroke of half-time.

"The injuries killed us in the first half. I was hoping to get to half-time to get Rio off... Rio was limping, he just couldn't get to it," he said.

Sad

It's what cost us the Champions League last season.

My predicted ManU team to play against Roma.

Van der Sar,

Brown, Ferdinand, Pique, Evra,

Scholes, Hargreaves, Carrick,

Ronaldo, Rooney, Nani.

Subs: Kuszczak, Neville, Silvestre, 0'Shea, Anderson, Giggs, Tevez.

SAF has said he is intending to make some changes for this game. If Ferdinand isn’t fit then Neville to step in at right back and Brown to move into the centre of defence. I’m hoping Nani is fit but if not, although I don’t have Park in the squad I would bring him straight in as a direct replacement for Nani, leaving the out of form Giggs on the bench. I think SAF will keep Giggs in the squad regardless for his leadership and experience qualities on what is a very important European night at OT. Hargreaves in place of Anderson to stiffen up the defensive midfield in front of a weakened defence due to a missing Vidic and possibly Ferdinand.

I’m expecting Man U to win, they are the current form team winning their last 10 Champions League home games.

Nani, Saha, Fletcher and Vidic are definitely out.

My team would be

-------------VDS

O'Shea---Rio---Brown---Evra

----------Hargreaves
Scholes/Andershow----Carrick

Ronaldo-------------------Park
------------Rooney

I think Sir Alex's comments about resting players are simply just a continuation of his mind games, he won't be so foolish as to split the team and risk being caught out. Although in saying that, I have a feeling Fergie will rest Scholes tonight and play Anderson with the Arsenal match in mind. I think that team is more than capable of overturning Roma, as long as they don't play like they did on Sunday....

possibly mind games ...but i think Roma are already psychogically beaten . They know they have to score at least 2 goals away from home without reply to have any chance of going through ....a major loss of form for Man Utd to allow that to happen ..

I think Roma may get a goal but not enough to go through. 2-1 Utd.

Well another unlucky loss for us, Man U lethal as usual shame for De Rossi's penalty. If Man U is considered the best club of Europe I'm proud in supporting a team that played equally well as the red devils if not better in both legs, but it's the result that counts so praise for Manchester United

De Rossi missing that penalty was terrible. He skied it. That could have been a turning point for Roma. But they were truly outplayed all over the pitch. United had numerous chances in front of goal, pumping in crosses from the right, over and over and over again. The game could have easily been another thumping similar to what happened last year.

Roma did however start to play a bit better in the second half, and had a few good chances in front of goal.

In the end, United out played Roma. The loss of Totti really hurt them in front of goal I feel.

I thought Roma did ok and had several chances to score. The penalty was a bit dubious as Wes brown clearly played the ball and Mancini went down with a very delayed fall. Had De Rossi scored then it would probably have put a different complexion on the rest of the game. Man Utd had Ronaldo, Rooney, Scholes on the bench, and still played within themselves. Hargreaves and Tevez both had a great game and combined well to score a brilliant goal.

A deserved 3-0 win on aggregate with key players rested for the game against Arsenal on Sunday.

Very Happy

I don't think outplayed is the correct word to describe Man U's match. They did play awesome counter attack and in the first half of the match they were very dangerous on the right side but as I said they played awesome counter attack.

About the penalty if you pay attention on the replay Brown didn't touch the ball but first the right foot of Mancini that touches the ball then with his left leg puts Mancini down, then the fall is out of proportion of course but there aren't many doubts it was a penalty

You have a point GOBati but i think we will have to agree to disagree on the penalty. The ref was behind Mancini and Brown came in from the side, the ref would not be able to see Brown making contact with Mancinis boot, only the ball being deflected sideways. The collision of feet afterwards was between two players after the ball had gone, and maybe THAT is why the ref gave the penalty, but it was very harsh if that was the reason. The panel of experts on TV on Sky say it wasn't a pen Wink

I usually don't hear what people say, I have eyes to see on my own. Journalists usually tend to plump for the the team of their country, here they said it was a clear penalty Laughing

If you watch the replay it's not that difficult to see what I've said

United v Roma
