Paolo Maldini has just passed 1000 games for club and country
861 games for AC
126 for Italy national team
12 U-21 Italian team
1 Italian Olympic team

Now that is what I call a career and a loyal player to boot

1000 games and 24 seasons played for Milan that's definitely a great achievement

This season is his last. And then he'll be acting in films, at least he says so. Like Vinnie Jones, I guess.

Milan plan to retire the number 3 at the end of the season . Only to be issued again if his son ever makes it to the first team .

Is this the first time a footballer has had his number retired ?

Man City retired 23 (I think) after Marc Vivien Foe died. Different circumstances though. Wish Celtic had retired the number 7 after Larsson left. Our two best ever players wore it and don't want useless bassa's wearing it

I've asked the same question on another forum ......... and there are loads of retired numbers , usually when a player has died .

I believe that Maldini is head and shoulders the best defender I've ever seen .

Usually when asked to name my best ever player , I'd say Pele , with Maradona second and Cruijff third . But is there a case for saying that Maldini should be ranked up there with them . Just because a defender isn't as flashy and spectacular as a forward , doesn't mean he's not doing a better job for his team ; which is surely the yardstick for judging how good a player is ?

Simply awesome, irreplacable, I consider it a great honour to have seen this man play against my side in a European Cup Final.

Despite playing in a league that is not known for showing the game in it's best light Maldini has been a beacon for all that is great about the game. Thank you Paolo, if only there were more like you; truly an inspiration.

He is one of the best defenders ever I think.
I've been always liking Paolo Maldini because of either his defensive talents or his attitudes.
Well done big defender.
We will never forget you
