Hmm...i reckon if they want to hear their own national anthem they should play in their own countys league.

OK - what about when games were played in Cardiff at the Millennium Stadium?

Well then its a bit more plausable but id still rather it was only the national anthems from the country the team came from that got played.

Do you mean they country or league they come from?
I've been to the Millenium Stadium twice, for Community Shield games each time - both involved English teams, but the games were in Wales, and I wasn't happy to hear the English anthem and not the Welsh. I was most pigged off that they actually had Welsh guy Aled Jones singing a foreign anthem in his own country at Cardiff the last time I went Also - at international matches, both country's anthems are played. |

Whats the point in playing any anthem at all? It just a waste of time.

I meant country they come from. Yeah i suppose it would be annoying being welsh n all. But i do think it should be a countryman who sings the national anthems, not a foreigner. |

I agree with both of you there - what is the point of a national anthem anyway? (Maybe I'll ask that in the general section unless I get beaten to it
But - if there is one - I hate it when someone from my own country sings a foreign one without balancing it by singing his own |

surely it will just be the welsh national anthem for cardiff and the english national anthem for Portsmouth?
dont really see what the big deal is. twmcat i dont get your logic - you ask what the point of the national anthem is as though its trivisl and meaningless and yet complain that your national anthem was not used when the final was at cardiff. you either care or you dont surely? |

i would have thought both anthems will be sang, as there is a team from both wales and england. surely it cant annoy or affect anyone if the welsh is sang, afterall there will be half a stadium full of cardiff supporters.
just on a side note, why ar there welsh teams playing in english leagues? cardiff, swansea, wrexham etc, have they always been there? |

This would best answer your question
Cardiff joined the Football league in 1920 after being invited to join. At the time, Wales didn't have it's own national league. Actually Wales didn't have a national league of it's own until 1992.

I didn't realise it was so recent. With regards to the anthems, I don't see any problem playing the Wesh anthem if Cardiff are in the final. But playing the welsh anthem at Cardiff when 2 English teams are competing I wouldn't necessarily agree with, or see the point of. |

I don't really see a problem with playing both anthems but as others have said i don't at all see a problem with not playing a countries national anthem if neither side are from that country, despite it being held there.

Same as Floods - it would be like Man U meeting Chelsea in the Champions League Final in Moscow, no one would expect the Russian national anthem to be played. |

Yes because thats customary for the CL i believe, to play the national anthems of the teams competing.
There is a worry with this national anthem debate that this is going to be again billed as England against Wales, which it isn't as the English FA Cup final. Whether it is played or not i do not think it really matters. |

I cant see why they shouldnt the Welsh national anthem. Its not hard to play both. Its not even like they take long to do.
I wouldnt be bothered if i supported Cardiff and they didnt play the Welsh National anthem. Aslong as when they introduced God save the queen, they say something like "Will everybody stand for the British national Anthem" |

I don't see why not. If it was two Welsh teams competing wouldn't you want Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau played?
Exactly, I don't see why there is an issue with playing both. |
