Apparently his contract with Reading runs out in 2009 and his wish is to come home to Seattle and play for the new expansion team the Seattle Sounders FC.

Hahnemann eyeing home comforts

Marcus Hahnemann has admitted next season is likely to be his last for Reading as he prepares to move back to the United States to play for the Seattle Sounders.

Hahnemann’s contract runs out at Reading in the summer of 2009, and he admits he has always entertained the idea of finishing his career back home.

"We have always thought eventually when we’re done that we would go back, but you never know when that will be. We always talked about if a team did start up in Seattle then we’d want to go back at some stage,” Hahnemann told GetReading.

“Now there is going to be one. They are doing everything right and eventually when Reading don’t want me any more and I get sick of driving on the wrong side of the road and buying petrol instead of gas then I might leave.

“The team will start playing in Seattle in two summers’ time. They had a big press conference on Monday and announced the team name and logo.

“It always used to be the Seattle Sounders and they were talking about changing the name, but you can’t change the name.

“They said it will be different now because it’s an MLS team, but when Beckenbauer and Pele were playing over there it was the Sounders and they are sticking with that. The logo is cool with the Space needle.”

First, Hahnemann must ensure Reading’s survival in The Premier League, and three points against Fulham this weekend would be a great help.

It will be an emotional day for the 35-year-old though, as he faces the prospect of putting a huge nail in his former club’s coffin.

"Games against Fulham are always meaningful for me. When we play them it is always pretty entertaining for the American boys, and the winners get the banter rights.

"But this time I almost want to downplay it. I'll feel like that especially when I see the guys at Fulham on Saturday, because the game has so much meaning to us both.

"I am good friends with them. I see Kasey [Keller] every once in a while, we end up going to shows together and hanging out. So in some ways it won't be a happy day for me if we win, I could help send my buddies down to the Championship.

"Last year we went through the exact same scenario. We played them late on in the season and won 1-0 at home. After the game I came upstairs and someone asked if I was happy with the clean sheet.

"I wasn't at all happy and I didn't feel like celebrating because I'd just talked to my buddies from Fulham and they were as down as you could be. It's one of those things and you try not to think about it."

He's been here over six years now, and has been a great servant to us. In terms of shot stopping he has for the majority been outstanding this season, as he has been for many years now. His distribution is his only real weakness, his kicking is very poor indeed. This recent contract extension until 09 will be his last with the Club i think, unless we go and stay down, in which case he is easily good enough to remain beyond that point.
