I read today that there is some discussion about allowing the Welsh national anthem as well as the English one before the kick-off at the FA final this year.

Any comments?

Hmm...i reckon if they want to hear their own national anthem they should play in their own countys league.

Well then its a bit more plausable but id still rather it was only the national anthems from the country the team came from that got played.

Do you mean they country or league they come from? Confused

I've been to the Millenium Stadium twice, for Community Shield games each time - both involved English teams, but the games were in Wales, and I wasn't happy to hear the English anthem and not the Welsh.

I was most pigged off that they actually had Welsh guy Aled Jones singing a foreign anthem in his own country at Cardiff the last time I went Evil or Very Mad

Also - at international matches, both country's anthems are played.

Whats the point in playing any anthem at all? It just a waste of time.

Yeah i suppose it would be annoying being welsh n all. But i do think it should be a countryman who sings the national anthems, not a foreigner.

I agree with both of you there - what is the point of a national anthem anyway? (Maybe I'll ask that in the general section unless I get beaten to it Wink)

But - if there is one - I hate it when someone from my own country sings a foreign one without balancing it by singing his own Twisted Evil

surely it will just be the welsh national anthem for cardiff and the english national anthem for Portsmouth?

dont really see what the big deal is.

twmcat i dont get your logic - you ask what the point of the national anthem is as though its trivisl and meaningless and yet complain that your national anthem was not used when the final was at cardiff. you either care or you dont surely?

i would have thought both anthems will be sang, as there is a team from both wales and england. surely it cant annoy or affect anyone if the welsh is sang, afterall there will be half a stadium full of cardiff supporters.

just on a side note, why ar there welsh teams playing in english leagues? cardiff, swansea, wrexham etc, have they always been there?

This would best answer your question

Cardiff joined the Football league in 1920 after being invited to join. At the time, Wales didn't have it's own national league. Actually Wales didn't have a national league of it's own until 1992.

Quote:

The league was formed in 1992 by Alun Evans, Secretary General of the Football Association of Wales, as he believed that the Welsh international football team was under threat from FIFA. Wales, along with the other three home nations, have a permanent seat on the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and it was thought that many FIFA members were resentful of this and pressing for the four nations to unite into one combined side for the whole of the United Kingdom.

At the time, Wales was almost unique in world football in that it didn't have a national league of its own (Puerto Rico, part of the United States, also has football and baseball teams that compete in the larger country's system, though no promotion and relegation exists). Traditionally, the best teams in Wales had always played over the border in the English leagues. Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham are members of the Football League. Aberdare Athletic, Merthyr Town (both now defunct) and the original Newport County were all members of the English football league before being relegated. Famously, Oswestry Town F.C. an English team did the reverse and played within the Welsh football pyramid until they merged with Total Network Solutions to form the New Saints.

Because of poor transportation links, it has always been much easier for Welsh clubs to travel east-west than north-south so clubs tended to look east to England for competitors and many of the top semi-professional sides in Wales also played in the English football league; Bangor City were founder members of the Football Conference (then the Alliance Premier League) in 1979 and reached the FA Trophy final in 1984, before transferring to the new League of Wales in 1992.

The formation of the League of Wales saw the start of a bitter dispute between the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and those non-English League clubs who wanted to remain part of the English football league. The 'Irate Eight', as they were dubbed, consisted of Bangor City, Barry Town, Caernarfon Town, Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport County, Newtown and Rhyl.

Prior to the inaugural season, Bangor City, Newtown and Rhyl returned to play in Wales. However as Rhyl's application to join the league was late, they were placed in the second level of the pyramid system. Because of FAW sanctions, the remaining five clubs were forced to play their home matches in England. Following a season in exile at Worcester City, five became four, as Barry Town joined the Welsh league system.

A court ruling in 1995 allowed the remaining four clubs to return to Wales to play their home matches while still remaining within the English system; despite this victory, Caernarfon Town decided to join the League of Wales. However, Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport County remain in the English league pyramid system.

Surprised

I didn't realise it was so recent.

With regards to the anthems, I don't see any problem playing the Wesh anthem if Cardiff are in the final.

But playing the welsh anthem at Cardiff when 2 English teams are competing I wouldn't necessarily agree with, or see the point of.

I don't really see a problem with playing both anthems but as others have said i don't at all see a problem with not playing a countries national anthem if neither side are from that country, despite it being held there.

Same as Floods - it would be like Man U meeting Chelsea in the Champions League Final in Moscow, no one would expect the Russian national anthem to be played.

Yes because thats customary for the CL i believe, to play the national anthems of the teams competing.

There is a worry with this national anthem debate that this is going to be again billed as England against Wales, which it isn't as the English FA Cup final.

Whether it is played or not i do not think it really matters.

I cant see why they shouldnt the Welsh national anthem. Its not hard to play both. Its not even like they take long to do.

I wouldnt be bothered if i supported Cardiff and they didnt play the Welsh National anthem. Aslong as when they introduced God save the queen, they say something like "Will everybody stand for the British national Anthem" Smile

I don't see why not.

If it was two Welsh teams competing wouldn't you want Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau played?

Exactly, I don't see why there is an issue with playing both.
