GRONINGEN-AJAX GAME CALLED OFF

Ajax's Eredivisie clash at FC Groningen on Sunday was postponed due to crowd trouble.

One end of the Euroborg stadium was covered in smoke after fans reportedly set fire to toilet rolls, some of which were thrown onto the pitch.

Referee Erik Braamhaar took the players back to the dressing rooms before calling the game off after discussions between both captains and safety officials.


Groningen coach Ron Jans said the decision to call the game off was taken on medical advice due to the smoke enveloping the stadium.

"The club doctors felt it was irresponsible to play," Jans said on Ajax's official website.

"There is too large a chance that there could be breathing problems."


Disappointment at the postponement was tempered for Ajax by news PSV Eindhoven had failed to beat FC Twente at the Philips Stadion.

The 1-1 draw means Ajax's title hopes are still alive. Adrie Koster's men are six points behind PSV but have a game in hand.

If PSV lose at Vitesse Arnhem on the final day next weekend then victory for Ajax in their two remaining games would see the Amsterdammers, who have a better goal difference, claim the trophy.

Groningen have already secured a place in the end-of-season UEFA Cup play-offs.

this guys are so stupid. ther was already fire before the players wher on the field (stewards tried to stop it with other paper...damn how dumb) then when the players came on the fields the fans wher throwing the rest of the toilet papers.

Its not football, its just something that is allowed to happen because the police cant deal with it and the "fans" know this.

If i had my way all football hooligans like these poeple would be shot in the face, tossers.

groningen fans really hate us because we bought the 3 best players of them.
even on the news,newspapers and internet you saw ther was a real anger from them (or how do i say?)
and its mad they let 1000nds of toiletpaper rolls in the stadium (dangerous)
then if you see how they try to stop the fire...man oh man.
if this was going to happend in the amsterdam arena they would give them the win (3-0)and ajax wouldnt be alloud to have supporters in the stadiumin the first 3 home matches. But no...now we have the rematch on wednesday...with all these mad "fans"
