28 Dec 2005 Everton 1-3 Liverpool - EPL

Liverpool:
Reina,
Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Warnock,
Gerrard (Luis Garcia 85), Sissoko, Alonso, Kewell (Riise 80),
Crouch (Morientes 77), Cisse

Quote:
Crouch's opener gave the Reds a dream start as he latched onto the brilliant Gerrard's headed pass and rounded Nigel Martyn before slotting the ball home. Gerrard then added a second with a rasping drive into the bottom corner of the net to confirm Liverpool's early superiority.

The game appeared to be heading for a comfortable Liverpool victory until James Beattie headed past Pepe Reina three minutes before the break to give the home side an unlikely lifeline.
But just a minute after the break Cisse drifted past David Weir before curling a low shot into the far corner of the net to make the 3 points safe for Liverpool.

Everton's cause wasn't helped by the 68th minute dismissal of Phil Neville after he collected a second yellow card for a foul on Sissoko.

Rafa's men remain 3rd in the Premiership after their nine wins out of nine in the Premiership and in keen dispute of Champions Chelsea after inflicting a fifth consecutive defeat on their City rivals.

Match Reactions:

Crouch: "I think that's my sweetest goal of all. We all know what this game means to the supporters in this part of the world, so for me to get the first goal gave me a great buzz because I knew it was so crucial."
"My confidence is really high and that's natural when you're in the goals. When my chance came I had no hesitation in putting it away."

Gerrard: "It's also special to win a derby game and even more so for the local lads because we have a lot of family and friends at the game. It's nice to get the local bragging rights, until the next derby game comes around anyway."

Carra: "As a defender you want to keep a clean sheet and so that's why we're disappointed they scored. Djibril got an early goal for us in the second half and that was probably the turning point because we were expecting a backlash from them at that time.
"The derby game is my favourite of the year, especially at Goodison, and so it's nice to win."

Rafa: "The team is playing well and with confidence. We knew before the game it would be physical and we knew what to do. The whole team worked hard, everybody."
"The big difference for us this season is we know how to handle the physical games and we have players like Sissoko, Crouch and Reina who have helped us do that."
