Specnur is constantly banging on about how overrated Ronaldo is and how he never does it in the big games......you just seemed to be re-iterating the same rubbish he spouts. Apologies.....if it is ALL your own thinking....... I mentioned Newcastle because I wanted to know what you consider a BIG game to be.....if Newcastle were playing in it. The point I was making is that Champions League games are ALL big games and Ronaldo is the top scorer in that competition as well as in the TOP football league in the world...the EPL. As far as Ronaldo playing against Barca.....you can read my comments on the Messi v Ronaldo thread. They were playing in completely different roles. Messi did NOTHING that caused Man Utd a problem they couldn't deal with at Old Trafford, whereas Ronaldo created the goal for Scholes. and thanks for correcting me on the Inter thing....the Milan sides always confuse me |

when did i say ronaldo is overrated, i love watching him play. i cant believe you compared me to him. You speak to most of the people on here and they will say the same thing. Its fact. i know you can argue that just because he doesnt score in the big games it doesnt mean he hasnt played well. But when we talk about ronaldo this season we talk about his goals!. i know messi did not create many goal scoring opportunities but you cant say he wasnt a problem for the defense. and saying ronaldo created Man Uniteds goal is a joke. he didnt pass to scholes. We are not going to agree, because unlike me you can only see one side of the argument and therefore its is pointless!

Jac, we are havin a debate, just because I'm putting the other side of the argument to yours doesn't make the discussion pointless because you have failed to get me to say "i'm wrong....you're right". You have made valid points......but so have I, like most things in life.....it isn't a case of being black or white, right or wrong, more often than not the truth is a compromise, a shade of grey. |

You're having a laugh. If it's rubbish that i'm spouting dismantle it. I guess you missed both Barcalona games!THe recent games against Chelsea and Arsenal.Even against ten man Liverpool he could n't do a thing until, they ran out of steam. He's got 4 goals against the top 4 in the prem man city (derby game ) makes 5 big games in the prem and he has 4 goals 2 of which was aaginst Everton in one game 1 against the depleted Liverpool and one against Arsenal. If that sound like someone who should be recommended for best player in the league then that's your choice ,the best in Europe would be outrageous. His perforamnce against Roma was a good performance only because Rome currently are near the top of their domestic table. His games against Lyon were ok ,but Lyon are not exactly known for the defense. Here's a quote for you that's easy to use. Ronaldo will play against Chelsea and he will be shut down 90% of the game. there you go like the 2nd Barca game ,a bold prediction for you to use freely. But history tells me you won't ,because i will be right again. If you want to know why he can't perform against the top prem sides? Holding midfielders. Those teams with the best holding midfileders always shut him down Chelsea (makelele) Arsenal (Flamini) and Liverpool (mascherano). If you notice that mascherano was sent off in the Liverpool game in which Ronaldo was able to score and if i'm not wrong i think he scored after mascherano left the game. All three players are strong and quick.Chelsea and Liverpool benefit a great deal from the holding player because their backs are a touch slower tha Ronaldo.Arsenal on the other hand have the impressive Clchy who ronaldo has no chance against ,but flamini is able to act as cover for Toure who is probably faster than ronaldo ,but not quicker. It doesn't take rocket science to dismantle all the hype given to Ronaldo as it is baseless if you are able to look deeper into it. make no mistake Ronaldo is a fine player he has so much dimension to his game that it makes him a special player and head and shoulders above the majority of players in the world. But the big games are supposed to be what a player getting his attention thrives in.That hasn't been the case as mentioned in detail above. |

Apologies Specnur for putting it that way.......instead of saying you were spouting rubbish I should have said that I strongly disagree with your opinion. I watched both games against Barcelona and my opinion on Ronaldo's performance is a positive one. The top teams in the world are where they are because they contain the world’s best attackers and defenders. Ronaldo’s reputation is well known and the top sides single him out for extra special treatment, putting 2 and 3 players on him as soon as he receives the ball. No one individual can consistently win games on his own, it takes team play and support from team mates. Messi in the two games against United emphasises that very point, for all his great play the end product was zilch, and had he been deployed in a similar role to Ronaldo you would have seen Messi destroyed by Ferdinand and Brown. The games against Barcelona were very tactical with Ronaldo playing out of position in a loan role up front and he played better in that position over the two legs than Barcelona’s Eto’o. In my opinion Ronaldo contributed well to team play. You obviously expect BIGGER things from him, presumably wanting to see him win both games for United with a stunning individual virtuoso performance. It’s unlikely for ANYONE to do this against the top sides in the world on a regular basis. Please tell me, if you can, who has done this better than Ronaldo over this last season? Your prediction that he will be shut out for 90% of the Chelsea game is not a very bold prediction. Statistically, in an even game, there are 20 outfield players so any one individuals’ involvement is likely to be close to the 5% mark. So I predict that he is likely to be ineffective for at least 95% of the game. On the other hand, if you are saying he will be shut out for 90% of his 5% involvement in the game, then that is an entirely different prediction. How do you intend to measure that prediction? Goals scored, shots on goal, successful passes made, assists, one on one’s won, tackles won, or is it one moment of individual brilliance to win the game? To suggest the hype surrounding Ronaldo is baseless “if you look deeper into it” is absolute nonsense. The hype is there because the boy has YET again been sensational in the EPL and is the outstanding goal scorer in the Champions League. He is THE phenomenal all round attacking midfield player. He has tremendous physique, pace and skill. He is brilliant in the air, scores goals with left foot, right foot, headers, from open play, from individual play, from free kicks, devastatingly good from the penalty spot. Defenders are sh*t scared by his mere presence on the pitch. Contrast that with Messi who's main attribute is good close control with his left foot only, with little end product, and is diminuitive in stature. No comparison in my opinion, and it's unfair on Messi to try and compare him to such an incredible athlete as Ronaldo. |

I covered his obvious talents above which basically agrees with what you've wrote here. Yes Messi is a very one dimensional player that much i have known for a while and is why i never considered him Better than Ronaldinho.........ever.But, his one attribute is effective in big games the majority of the time. Now if i'm a manager i know who i would pick for my team Messi without question,Ronaldo is almost a jack of all trades that hasn't mastered it enough to be effective in the big dance.I know who those sensationalistas would pick ! I don't think all defenders are scared of Ronaldo. You can't convince me Clichy scared of him i would actually say the opposite is true.Or how about Glen Johnson,Sagna,Toure (when he's concentrating) Gallas,Carvalho,A.Cole,Mascherano you get my gist.None of the above fear that boy and the majority of them handle him alone man to man with no cover. Look, the main thing is Ronaldo is still very young and he has to question himself about his recent performances and should find a great opportunity to make himself a true great. But right now he just has the tools to become that. |
