Looks like Pia haven't seen anyone she finds better than Scurry (except for Solo of course) yet, so she keeps Scurry and keep trying the most promissing alternatives until she does .

Maybe it's time now to be brave and drop her and bring in a younger person , get them ready for the bigger tournaments. Bring them on when the game is won , just to give em a bit of playing time.

I sympathize with Pia. GK is the one position on the field where you just can't get it wrong. That's why it is the one position where experience truly matters, and probably why Lukenbill was brought up and a kid with U-23 experience. Because there is currently no league in the states so most of what she has to choose from are promising college stars, who ultimately lack international experience, which again with a gk is a big deal. And because the Olympics are right around the corner she has very little opportunity to experiment and give experience in that position. She will probably continue to experiment in the Algarve, but in the CONCAF I just don't know. If she looses in the CONCAF Oly qualifiers she'll be done for in a big way.

I think she's gutsy, but not to the point of insanity and that's why she seems to be looking for new possibilities, but not going too far outside the box. With Scurry she ultimately knows what she's getting a great goalie past her prime that will let in a soft goal against lesser competition, but ultimately not lose her composure. And with a better, quicker backline than the one at the WWC she can hopefully minimize this. And that will only be necesary if Solo get's injured. With a green gk she just doesn't know, and worse neither does her backline.

If she had more time and competitions to prepare I think it would be a whole new story and she'd actively seek some young college punks with some skills and an ego to match Solo's, throw in Scurry for fairness, and let them all have a cage match for the spot.

I hear what your saying but I just don't think Scurry can cut it anymore at the top level. You only have to look at the w/c debacle to see that. She can't kick the ball far and her reaction time is just too slow compared to that of Solo's. And as you say this position requires experience so it looks like we're stuck with Scurry for now. But I gotta feeling that it's gonna end in tears if she is between the sticks in the qualifying for the Olympics.

I think we completely agree, she should be dropped. The problem for Pia is, who? And unfortunately there are no obvious answers. Hopefully Pia will bring Alexander to the Algarve, just so we can see, and she will prove a solid alternative. She apparently was very good at Portland and for the U23's, so clearly she's got some experience with international pressure. Luckenbill seems to have had her disasters and she's no spring chicken, so I don't think she's the answer.

I think Pia will not want to risk Scurry in CONCAF Oly qualifiers, especially against Mexico. The Mexican's are quick, they've got an awesome goalie, and if only they could play 90 minutes instead of 25 I think they could actually compete against us. Scurry letting in a cheap one could be a disaster if we play them on a night their goalie is on fire.

The USWNT is officially going to play a friendly in Sweden on July 5th, the city is yet to be determined. Hopefully they'll put this one on the internet, or even better on tv.

There's more chance of you seeing the US v Sweden on tv over there than I've got of catching it , unless I move to Sweden Wink

I'd like to see anyone other than Scurry at the Algarve , but I doubt that will happen and she will go and probably let a few in Wink What happened to Barnhart ? The Algarve would of been a good place to give her a shot in goal.

The USA needed an injury winner from Carli Lloyd to see off the Aussie's.

What's going on Shocked It took a penalty shoot-out to beat Canada and now a injury time winner to win the game. Have we been blessed for to long with easy wins.

Another match with the Aussie , the USA winning 5-4. Winning it in the 94th minute. If you wish to concede 3 goals in 45 minutes just put in Briana Scurry in goal for the second half Rolling Eyes

USA scorers : Tarpley 2 , Wambach 2 , Hucles

Australia scorers : Whitehill og , Walsh , Colthorpe , Rampone og

The USA are conceding too many goals for my liking. The defense really needs to be looked at.

If you watched it smithy, I'm surprised you didn't throw the tele out the window. Honestly, it was terrible defending. And Scurry is past her prime and needs to be on the bench as backup or completely off the squad. I don't know how they can play her over Hope.

Australia even had an opportunity to nip it at the end there but got burned on a counter attack by the US.

I didn't see the game luckily although Smurfy you would of been right , the tv would of gone flying out the window Laughing

Barnie has shown she is a good number 2 and now should get her chance. Solo and her should be the teams top two keepers. By playing Scurry your just going back into the past. The defense just doesn't feel comfortable with her between the sticks. I've not yet seen the highlights but two own goals , come on , a keeper should have some authority in her own area.

I finally got around to watching the game last evening. Wow, there is much work to be done in the back. Australia exposed that we are not the fastest in the back. Seems like we spent way too much time chasing, which is not a good thing. Also, not closing in on players at or inside the 18 yard box is a recipe for disaster, and that is something else Pia must address. Whitehill had a game to forget in front of her home crowd, not like her but everyone has an off day. Wink

On the posistive side, ball movement was nice, short quick passes. With the talent we have up front, we're always going to be dangerous and get shots off. Tarpley, Wambach and Kia worked very well together. The midfield was OK, wasn't always linking up well with the frontline and the backline. Boxx had a few chances when she went forward.

As for the keeper situation, Solo is the clear #1. I'll leave it at that.

Overall it was a win, and it was only a friendly. They are still a work in progress but I liked what Pia has done with these players. Cool
