Being able to speak English will be one of the main requirements for non-EU footballers to play in the Barclays Premier League starting this autumn.

Failure to do so will mean players from South America, Africa and other non-European countries will be banned from joining clubs in England’s top league, according to Guardian online.

This was introduced by the local ministry under a new points-based immigration system yesterday.

Applicants will face an English language test which will cover ‘everyday phrases and simple conversation’. This will be a part of a set of new rules set in place for non-EU skilled migrants who wants to work in Britain.

The immigration minister, Liam Byrne, said that there would have been 20,000 fewer migrants coming to Britain last year had the new rules been in force.

Entertainers and other types of performers who are going to United Kingdom to perform at one-off events and festivals will not be affected. They will be covered by a new business visitors' visa to be unveiled later this year.

New skilled migrants will be expected to speak to a "basic-user standard", using familiar everyday expressions, and be able to discuss basic personal details.

Byrne added that Premier League footballers and other elite sports people would not be exempt from the requirement: "It is a basic requirement that they have some command of English," he said.

This plan was introduced to make sure skilled migrants do not take the jobs of the locals and also raise productivity by 20% as estimated by the UK Home office.

never gonna happen. its just big talk from the government to make them appear tough on immigration.
the huge amount of taxes paid by footballers will be more than enough to see the players sailing through any 'tests' they are given.

Oi ! steady on old chap ,that is one of best British players in history.

But the subject is ridiculous. What is the purpose of such a rule? It's a business partnership that should not be
stopped by such facist ideals. Doesn't sound like the 21st century to me.
