He has said he'll be staying at Liverpool for the rest of his career hasn't he? The funny thing was it sounded almost as though he was deflated, or disheartened at the thought, knowing he's "missed his chance".

Which he probably does know. He couldn't turn around after the Chelsea farce and decide he's leaving again - he knows people wouldn't forgive him i reckon.

And £25m isn't enough to tempt us, so there's no chance in hell of it happening i wouldn't of thought. In fact, Liverpool have stated that the idea of a bid of Gerrard is mere "fantasy".

It's easy to see why he's disheartened at the thought of staying at Liverpool, he knows that the chance of winning ther Premier League is slipping away from him.

And anyway this could backfire massively for Inter, who's to say Gerrard will be able to adapt to Italian football?

I agree though, Liverpool will never let him go for £25m, or any sum of money IMO...

Gerrard is 27, he could easily be at be at the heart of our midfield for the next 5 years. In those 5 years why can't we win the league? We've been improving steadily every season under Benitez, and if that continues i'm sure we will win the league within the next 5 years.

I've been quite encouraged by this season. We've solved our biggest problem (a 25+ goal a season striker) and we have again done very well in Europe. We weren't close to winning the league, but with all the problems we have had i think we have done relatively well to be only 11 points behind 1st.

Without all the problems we have had this season, we could easily be within touching distance of Chelsea and Man U.

Newcastle UNITED PLAN £3M ANFIELD RAID

Kevin Keegan will look to bolster his back four during the summer transfer window, and he hopes to lure left fullback John Arne Riise from Liverpool in a £3million transfer.

“He is still our player at the moment and he knows if we receive a good offer - good for him and the club - it could be,” said Reds boss Rafael Benitez. “But he is a fantastic professional.”

Magpies fans, do you think Riise would be a good signing?

CAPELLO WANTS CARRA

Fabio Capello wants Jamie Carragher to come out of international retirement.

The England boss wants Carragher and Man Utd's Paul Scholes to reconsider their decisions to retire from international football and be part of the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

"Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher are very good players and the door is always open," said Capello.

"If they want to come back, we will certainly have them back.

"We will make attempts with the players that have retired from international football, but we won't and can't force anybody to play for England.

"It is down to them."

KEITA LINK PLAYED DOWN

Various sources has linked Sevilla’s midfielder Seydou Keita with a move to Liverpool.

The Mali international has had a good season and it’s no surprised that he’s been linked with a move to several top clubs in Europe.

However according to Setanta Sports, the player’s agent Pascal Boisseau dismissed the speculation as “absolute rubbish”.

“It’s absolutely rubbish.” said the agent when asked about the rumour.

“The player is happy at Sevilla, focused on helping them to try and qualify for the Champions League.

“We will discuss with Sevilla when the season is over.”

Liverpool chief scout Eduardo Macia also dismissed the rumours.

“Keita is not our objective because we are working now on a list of three players for this position, but he is not part of it,” Macia told Spanish reporters.

“I mean that he is a tremendous player, but he is not part of our plans”.

Joaquin, Milner and Menez are amongst the names we're linked with this morning, with the usual suspects hanging on to their Anfield careers by a thread.

Bolton BID FOR GUTHRIE

Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson wants to sign permanently Danny Guthrie.
The Mail on Sunday says Megson is closing in on the signature of Guthrie from Liverpool for £1.5million.

Liverpool OFFER PLAYERS FOR MILNER EXCHANGE

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is chasing Newcastle United winger James Milner.
The News of the World says the Geordies are interested in five Liverpool first-teamers, with John Arne Riise and Jermaine Pennant top of their list.
And Benitez is ready to negotiate an exchange with 22-year-old Milner heading to Anfield.

LFC RUMOUR MILL
ARE Everton and Liverpool poised to do battle over Valencia winger Joaquin? That's one of the more imaginative rumours doing the rounds on the internet?
The speculations states that he is ready to leave Spain to play in England and the two clubs on Merseyside might be ready to fight over him
The Spanish international who plays on the right wing would be a welcome addition to both clubs, and many more in the Premier League.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is pushing Peter Crouch towards Aston Villa.
The Mail on Sunday says he is desperate for Crouch to join Villa as part of a swap deal with Barry and is annoyed that Crouch's agents are trying to get a £75,000-a-week offer from Portsmouth.
Martin O'Neill has been offered Scott Carson, Jon Arne Riise and Crouch for Barry but Liverpool wanted cash as well - something O'Neill is reluctant to pay as he regards Barry as more valuable than Crouch, who only has one year left on his contract.
Crouch is interested in a return to Villa Park but he also has a strong loyalty to Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, while a move to Manchester City would allow him to keep his north-west home.

Italian web reports suggest Rafa Benitez wants to cash in on the chaos at Lazio by signing Swiss defender Valon Behrami.
Sporting director Walter Sabatini and general secretary Giampiero Persichetti have quit the Rome club this week after Lazio's Coppa Italia defeat brought the curtain down on a poor season.
Star names are set to be sold off in the summer with Liverpool leading the chase for Swiss defender Valon Behrami.
West Ham, Portsmouth and Manchester City are also keen on the 22-year-old.
A formal bid is now being prepared, say reports.

IF Liverpool don't get Gareth Barry, then web rumours say he will turn his attention to Sevilla midfielder Seydou Keita.
The Spanish boss bid £10 million for Barry last week but the bid looks set to get laughed out by the midlands giants who would seek £20 million plus to even consider letting their captain leave.
With Liverpool having a limited budget this season, Benitez may now turn his attention to Keita, who would command a fee in the £10 million range.
A Liverpool insider told The Sun: "Rafa has Keita very high up on his list for this summer and may well make a bid for him."

Norway International John Arne Riise's future looks uncertain, after Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has indicated that Riise may be for sale, one year before his contract is up.
At a press conference on Thursday, Benitez admitted he would listen to offers for the left-back, who has a year remaining on his current contract.
"He is not playing at the moment but he knows that if we receive an offer that is good for him and good for us, okay, we will talk," said the Spaniard to BBC.
"But at this moment he is our player. I am really pleased with him because he is a fantastic professional," Benitez said.

Once again, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is being linked with an exit from Anfield, this time to Inter Milan for £25million.
A tabloid newspaper says the Italian giants want to make him their main signing as they begin their centenary celebrations.
A top Inter official is reported to have said: "We need to make a big signing for next season and Gerrard was at the centre of our thoughts.
"Liverpool gave us the most emphatic response he was not for sale.
"We have drawn up a list of alternatives. But if Liverpool decide to sell, Gerrard is our top priority."
It is not the first time Inter have tried to take the England midfielder.
Preliminary contact for the Kop skipper, 27, who has two years left on his current contract, was made during the Champions League second-round tie between the sides in February
***
Elsewhere, Benitez is reportedly planning a ₤10 million swoop for Sevilla midfielder Seydou Keita.
The Mali international moved to Andalusia from RC Lens last summer, and has impressed during his debut season in Spain.
The 28-year-old has already garnered significant interest from Juventus, who are also chasing his Sevilla team-mate Diego Capel.
And according to a national newspaper, Benitez is prepared to splash out £10 million – a third of his projected transfer budget – on the defensive midfielder, thus activating a release clause in his contract.
An inside source said: “Rafa has Keita very high up on his list for this summer and may well make a bid for him.”
The Reds’ sudden interest in central players has sparked speculation that Xabi Alonso – also linked with Juve – could leave in the summer, but it could also mean that Benitez simply seeks reinforcements for the two holding spots in his 4-2-3-1 formation.
***
Liverpool striker Peter Crouch is reported to want "showdown talks" with bossBenitez regarding his future at the end of the season.
His comments appeared today, after Benitez put a £15million price tag the striker.
Crouch told a national newspaper: "What I must do is speak to the manager. When all is said and done, I don't think I can have another season like this year where I've started nine Premier League games.
"Out of a 38-game league season, nine games is not the amount you want to be playing.
"I'll have to speak to the manager and see what his plans are. I need to see him and sort things out."
"I have to find out what he wants from me for next season and whether or not I can continue with that. In some ways I want to feel wanted. I've got a few questions I want to ask him, and I'm sure he has with me, too.
"So I'd like to speak to the manager and the club before I commit to anything and know whether or not I'll be here next year."
Speculation linking Liverpool to a new keeper has been steady for weeks, and the latest in line is Birmingham's Maik Taylor.
But the keeper has insisted that he is unaware if speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool is true or not.
Taylor said: "I don't know anything about it [Liverpool] but obviously I'm out of contract and would like my future sorted. But we have a big game on Sunday and that is the only thing on my mind right now."

MENEZ SEEKS SUMMER MOVE
Monaco star Jeremy Menez is almost certain to leave the club this summer, with Bordeaux, Liverpool and Internazionale said to be among his potential suitors...
Jérémy Menez is likely to be another hot young property leaving Ligue 1 this summer as the race for his signature hots up. Liverpool and Inter Milan have already been heavily linked with the player who celebrated his twenty-first birthday on Wednesday. However, it seems that Menez would be satisfied with a move to Bordeaux.

Having missed the last two months of the season with a groin strain, Jérémy Menez is a player who has had time to contemplate his future and it seems that, despite interest for some of Europe's largest sides, the young Frenchman is content to remain in his native country for the time being.

In an interview with France Football this week Menez talks of his desire to play in the Champions League and concedes that his future probably does not lie with his current club, Monaco.

“I have played two good seasons in Monaco and I want to go a little higher now," he explained. "By playing the Champions League, I can be offered what I want - in other words, to play for France.

"I do not dream of an especially large foreign club but there are clubs which are difficult to refuse. For the moment, I concentrate on the two last matches and one will see well what it occurs during the period from the transfers.

“Bordeaux could interest me, it is a stable club. I do not know Laurent Blanc, I do not know what it thinks of me. I am only 21 years old, to remain in France and to play the Champions League with a club like Bordeaux, that would be nice.”

Even if Nancy qualified for the Champions League it seems that they are not yet an established enough club to interest Menez however should Marseille finish third and lose Nasri to Lyon then Monaco's play-maker could well be the made to step-in at the Vélodrome.

Liverpool have set their sights on Barcelona’s £12m rated French left-back Eric Abidal (Daily Express)

Eric Abidal is a quality player who has been a regular at the Nou Camp since signing in the summer, however he (like many other players at the beleaguered club) seems to be on his way out of the La Liga club. The 28 year old is a international fixture for the French team and is at his peak and would surely be quite a coup if Rafa could snare him.

Sounds good to me.

My wish list for the summer, not likely to happen but as a football fan we call dream.............

In:
Joaquin
Abidal
Bosingwa
Maik taylor

Out:
Riise
Veronin
Intanje

Also there seems to be big doubts over the future of Xabi Alonso and Peter Crouch. I'd be gutted to see Xabi leave and im more or less resigned now to Crouch going (which im ok with as long as we replace him with quality).

Should these two move on my first choice replacements would be Gareth Barry and Robbie Keane.

Why Keane has not been linked with us yet (or more to the point why Rafa has not tried for him yet) is beyond my comprehention. Keane for me is a modern day Sheringham and could make all the difference to Liverpool slotting in alongside Torres.

Also for next season we need to see the promotion and steady continued progression to the 1st team of Nemeth and Insua.

Someone like Veronin should not be standing in the way of a telent like Nemeth, I can understand why he was signed if the plan was to nurture and develop Nemeth over a period of time unitl he's deemed ready but the continued inclusion of a player like Veronin over the coming seasons only undermimes the development of up and coming youth players. These players need to see that there is a rout into the 1st team should they have the talent, and from what ive seen so far Nemeth is the brightest prospect we've had in years.

This is not getting better...

Benitez tells O'Neill to get over it:
Quote:

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez on Monday suggested Martin O'Neill should come to terms with the prospect of losing captain Gareth Barry.

Aston Villa manager O'Neill insisted he and American owner Randy Lerner will make a last-ditch attempt to keep Barry - a £10million target for the Reds - at the club.

But Benitez said in the Liverpool Echo: "If your captain wants to leave, it's a problem, but that's football."

The Spaniard's latest comments are bound to further anger O'Neill, who was furious last week at the manner of Liverpool's approach for the England midfielder.

The Villa boss attacked Benitez when he was told the Spaniard had claimed to have had "prolonged discussions" with him about Barry, even though Benitez had never been quoted as saying that.

Liverpool's manager has staunchly defended his actions, saying: "I think the right approach when you want to sign a player is to talk to the manager.

"I was talking to Martin O'Neill. I said we would like to sign Gareth Barry and asked what the situation was.

"He just said he needed to talk to the owner and I said okay. He will not have any problems with his supporters because he never said to me he wanted to sell Barry.

"We were also talking about (Liverpool goalkeeper) Scott Carson because they have the option to sign him.

"We were just talking about football so why he was so angry, I do not know.

"I have been very clear. The player had said before that he wanted to play Champions League football. We knew that and so tried to sign a good player. It is that simple.

"If your captain wants to leave, it is a problem, but that's football."

O'Neill and Lerner will make one last bid to keep hold of Barry in the next 48 hours.

O'Neill said: "I wouldn't want to be saying how confident we are (of keeping Barry). It's a different era we live in. We will see.

"All I know is he has never expressed one iota of unhappiness in my time at Villa Park. He might not have stayed that long had he been really unhappy before.

"We are going to be sitting down very shortly and discussing Gareth's future. We won't let this lie.

"I am going to see the chairman in the next couple of days and, with a bit of luck, the two of us together might be able to persuade him to stay.

"I say persuade him - but he still has two years left on his contract."

O'Neill added: "Gareth is a demigod at Villa Park. He has that reputation and he is playing for England and he has not had to move to another club to do that.

"He has been particularly brilliant for us. We want to improve the team and our best chance of doing that is to keep our best players and adding some quality."

Barry admitted he had been affected by all the speculation over his future but was outstanding yesterday's 2-2 draw at West Ham which secured an Intertoto Cup spot for Villa.

O'Neill said: "Gareth might have been affected by the speculation last week but I thought he was back to his best at against West Ham.

"He did splendidly for us. You would not have thought he had anything else other than a win on his mind."

O'Neill also criticised Benitez, suggesting Liverpool had leaked their initial bid for the player to the media.

But Benitez said: "We made an offer but I think we were straight. When you make an official offer, you do so by fax. Some people see the fax and you cannot control everything.

"The Birmingham press found out about the offer and it was not our fault. They were very clever and used that information.

"I was talking with Martin O'Neill 20 days before that and nobody knew. We were doing things properly. We are waiting now to see what happens next."

What do you guys think of the final result out of this? Will Barry come to Anfield or stay at the Villa Park???

Apparently Beniztex has said his transfer plans are on hold for now du eto sepp blatter wanting to impliment the 6homebased player in every squad rule. If this happens crouch and pennant will stay and there will be a massive clearout, Liverpool only fielded 1 or two eglishmen in the starting XI, so if this happens they are fooked!

I think its unlikely it will be pushed trough for this season though.

Man Utd and Chelsea have better current squads and more money to spend on future players, plus there's always the wildcard of Arsenal and who knows what they will sign or what their current youngsters will turn into. It's pretty over optimistic to think Liverpool will win the league in the next five years. Especially as they haven't really gained any ground at all over the previous five.

It's already been quashed by the European Parlaiment and Blatter has been warned that he is creating another Bosman situation. So it's not going to happen. The TRUE situation at Liverpool might be that funds are being held up by the disagreement between the owners and the potential 50% sale to DIC. Rafa's hands are probably tied just now, so much for him moving quickly in the transfer market.

The European Parliament dealt another blow to Fifa president Sepp Blatter's controversial plans to curb the number of foreigners in the game by voting against the proposals yesterday. EU lawmakers rejected Blatter's "6+5 rule", which allows no more than five foreign players to start a match, by 518 votes to 49 but most backed the "home-grown player rule" of the European game's governing body Uefa.

"The parliament calls on the member states and sports associations not to introduce new rules that create direct discrimination based on nationality, such as Fifa's 6+5," the resolution said. "It calls on the Commission to recognise the legality of measures favouring the promotion of players who have come through training schemes, such as a minimum number of locally-trained players, irrespective of their nationality."

Fifa opposes the Uefa rule, which sets a quota of locally-trained players at clubs without any discrimination on nationality, arguing that it encourages recruitment at a young age.

Uefa says Blatter's proposal is unworkable in the EU because it contravenes the bloc's laws on the free movement of workers and could lead to costly legal challenges – a view echoed by the EU assembly.

"We ask Fifa to join forces with the European Parliament and the European Commission and fully back the 'home-grown' rule," Belgian MEP Ivo Belet said.

We did amass 82 points in 05/06, 1 behind United, so it isn't impossible.

And if we hadn't of had all the turmoil (which was a big hindrance, regardless of what people say) around the club this season i'm confident we would have been in the 80's this season.

It'd be tough for us to win the league, as the standard is immense now - it'd be a mighty struggle, and we'd be underdogs, but it's doable.
