Gerrard is 27, he could easily be at be at the heart of our midfield for the next 5 years. In those 5 years why can't we win the league? We've been improving steadily every season under Benitez, and if that continues i'm sure we will win the league within the next 5 years.

Man Utd and Chelsea have better current squads and more money to spend on future players, plus there's always the wildcard of Arsenal and who knows what they will sign or what their current youngsters will turn into. It's pretty over optimistic to think Liverpool will win the league in the next five years. Especially as they haven't really gained any ground at all over the previous five.

Don't be an idiot. Liverpool have improved immeasurably over the last few years.

Indeed the have but Man Utd and Chelsea have improved even more than they have. Whilst Liverpool are a better team now the gap between them and the big two is possibly bigger. I'm not saying it won't happen but how exactly do Liverpool go about closing the gap on teams who have much more buying power than they do and far better current squads? The other teams aren't going to just sit on their asses and wait for Liverpool to catch up. Add to that Arsenal improvement and the Spurs, Man City, Everton, Villa threat from below and it's far from clean sailing.

Also I firmly think a change it attitude is needed from Benitez in order to win the league. He drops too many points leaving out key players and isn't attacking enough aginst weaker sides.

I dunno where to post this, but since you guys were heavily linked with Silva, I thought I'll post it here.

The Valencia pair of David Villa and David Silva are prepared to leave to ease the financial difficulties of their club...

Quote:

Spain star Villa is set to be one of the sought-after signings of the summer, with a host of clubs across Europe reportedly interested.

Spanish newspaper Marca claimed earlier in May that Real Madrid would be prepared to pay Villa five million euros a season to join the Primera Liga champions, plus a transfer fee of 40 million euros which would double the price Valencia paid Zaragoza for Villa in 2005.

Silva, meanwhile, is rumoured to be the target of a 20 million-euro offer from Internazionale.

Although they said that they are happy at Valencia, they both said that, "If the best thing for the club is to get some money and sell me then I'll accept that".

Sammy Lee is in talks with Liverpool to become Benitez's assistant manager.

That's very good news after Pako left back in September - you always need someone to run ideas by and keep you from doing the blatantly stupid, and also compliment your own attributes. We haven't had that this season. Sammy was an inexperienced manager taking the Bolton job on, and could well be utter crap as one anyway, but he's a top-notch coach and will be a great addition.

But if the players struggle to understand Carragher they have no chance with him.

Bouzanis has been called up to the U-21 Australia side. Not bad for a 17-year-old.

Under-23s.

And he is currently rated as the world's best keeper under-18. I can back those claims having seen him play quite a few times. No one could score against him over here, even when he was playing under 18s with St George when he was only 15. The only goals scored against him were 2 v 1 situations and the like. He is strong, big and extremely quick and athletic. Good on him.

Martin O'Neill has reacted with fury to suggestions Aston Villa are prepared to let Gareth Barry join Liverpool.

An angry O'Neill told his club's official website: "I have not said anything of the sort. To suggest I would be happy to sell Gareth is simply not true.

"We are determined to keep Gareth at Villa Park. To say that I am resigned to losing him is simply not the case."

This is not at all going well for all the parties involved ain't it?

Hope they'll soon find a solution and end all the speculations as its dragging on and on...

Have you seen O'Neill lately? He's paraded our interest in the media at every given opportunity - he just wants to bump up any price if Barry does decide to eventually leave, by letting people know our interest and our offer.

He even had the nerve to say we'd released news of our offer to local papers, when the first anything was heard of it officially was in the Birmingham Post.

Oh and Malouda isn't unthinkable. He was one of our main targets in the summer, ahead of Babel.

He's not settled well though, as good a player as he is, and is too injury prone... not to mention a whinging b*stard.

D'Alessandro

D'Alessandro could be an option. As far as i know he's still under contract at Real Zaragoza who are on the brink of relegation and he has experience in the Premier League. Like Babel, he likes to cut in from the opposite wing onto his stronger foot and has the ability to pick a key pass. His affiliation with Mascherano may also help to lure him back to England.

Lee's glee at Anfield return:

Quote:

Benitez alluded to the need for a Liverpool heart restored to the backroom by saying: "We are very pleased to have brought Sammy back to Liverpool because he is someone who knows the club really well.

"He also knows about the passion of the club and about the standards that we set here so that will make it much easier for him to settle into his new role.

"But we have not brought Sammy back simply because he used to play for the club and used to work here as a coach.

"He is a very experienced and very well respected coach in his own right and his reputation in football made him the outstanding candidate when we knew we were looking for a new member of our coaching staff.

Quote:

"When a club the size of Liverpool comes in for you, and when a manager of the magnitude of Rafael Benitez wants you, then you cannot say no. When I found out they were interested in me I was really thrilled.

"After the sabbatical I have had I just wish the season was starting tomorrow, but the players have had a long, difficult and demanding season and they need to get away and get their batteries recharged.

"I have been around the Melwood training ground this morning and seen a lot of old faces but a lot of new faces as well.

"I have shaken hands with everyone and introduced myself. There are some great people here and I cannot wait to get working with them. It is so nice to be back."
