Newcastle stretched their unbeaten run to six games as they came from behind to beat Liverpool at Kingston Park last night.

But United's climb to third place in the Reserve League North was aided and abetted by a grotesque 82nd minute error from Liverpool right-back David Raven.

Raven failed to see goalkeeper Paul Willis rushing off his line as he covered a Matty Pattison through-ball and when Raven unwittingly rolled the ball goalwards from 16 yards, the pair collided and United midfielder Chris Farman was able to run the ball into the empty net.

The goal settled a close encounter in which Liverpool had taken a 12th-minute lead through first-teamer Neil Mellor who, on his return from injury, took advantage of a Paul Huntington stumble to angle a low shot past keeper Tim Krul.

As United hit back, a Pattison drive was deflected wide and Phil Cave brought a diving save from Willis, before the Magpies drew level in the 34th minute.

The busy Pattison played in Craig Baxter on the edge of the box and when Baxter's shot was blocked, Carl Finnigan followed up to drill a low shot past the diving Willis into the left corner.

Krul made a fine 41st minute double save from Mellor and Paul Anderson to keep Newcastle ahead at the interval.

United left-back Cave stayed off with an ankle injury at the break which required a hospital X-ray, and in the first six minutes of the second half David Mannix brought two saves from Krul before the teenaged Dutch keeper went full length to deny Anderson.

Mannix was stretchered off with a suspended broken leg on 65 minutes after coming off worst in a block tackle with David Edgar.

United had a great chance to take the lead 14 minutes from time when Danny Guthrie played a dangerous ball through his own box. Finnigan set up Daryl Smylie, but the young Irish midfielder blazed over from 10 yards.

However, another Liverpool blunder finally handed victory to Newcastle, who stretched their season's unbeaten home record to seven games.
