Courtenay plans Carlisle takeover

Former Carlisle United owner John Courtenay could be set for a return to the League One club.

The Dublin-based businessman has confirmed that talks with current owner Fred Story to buy the club back are at an advanced stage.

Courtenay took over from Michael Knighton at Brunton Park in 2002 but sold the club to Story two years later.

BBC Radio Cumbria understands talks between the two parties have been ongoing for several weeks.

Courtenay, a self-made millionaire who owns the Umbro franchise in Ireland, remains a popular figure amongst Carlisle supporters despite being in charge when the club were relegated out of the Football League in 2004.

Tim Graham, who runs unofficial supporters' website 'Cufconline.org', said fans would not be totally surprised by Courtenay's proposed return to the club.

"John has been the front-runner of all the names rumoured to be in talks with the club so it wouldn't come as much of a surprise if he did take over," he told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"They do say 'never come back' in these situations so it remains to be seen what will happen."

Fred story has did well with carlisle united so i feel he will be a big loss. Many carlisle fans think so also.

Also other news is Kieren Westwood has went to coventry for 500 thousand. A big loss also

Carlisle United have signed out-of-contract goalkeeper Ben Williams from Crewe Alexandra. The 25-year-old turned down a new deal at Crewe and has signed a three-year-deal at Brunton Park after four seasons and 150 games with Alex.

Carlisle United have confirmed that a team including chief executive David Allen has taken full control of the club from director Fred Story.

Football director Steven Pattison is handed responsibility for the school of excellence and youth development.

Andrew Jenkins retains his position as chairman and John Nixon will continue in the role of managing director.

Thirty four shares will remain in the hands of the Carlisle United Trust to be represented by Norman Steele.

Story will remain a major sponsor of the club, but no longer retains the post of director.

Fans have been warned not to expect too many changes in the way the club is run, and chief executive Allen believes the new team has inherited a stable club with potential to grow.

"I think we're able to build on the business model that Fred Story started," Allen told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"We've got the same aims to go forward which are to improve."

Carlisle signed old Micky Bridges. He'll be an excellent signing for the club - only mid to late 20's and has a good knack of finding the net. His goals will help Carlisle push for promotion this season.

Carlisle came from a goal down to beat Southend 2-1 and maintain their unbeaten record in League One.

Debutant Dougie Freedman had given the visitors the lead in style during the first half with a curling 20-yard shot.

But Southend lost that lead when Peter Clarke pushed Danny Livesey in the box and Danny Graham sent Steve Mildenhall the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Winger Cleveland Taylor then won it for the home side when he fired home a loose ball from six yards

Fair play to them, I think a lot of people maybe thought after a great season last year that they might step off the pace somewhat this season, but currently there are no signs of that happening. Will be interesting to see if they can keep it up and compete at the top of League one again.

With Michael Bridges and Bridge Wilkinson etc they definitely have enough quality to mount a serious title challenge.
