Roy Keane resigns as Sunderland manager

Roy Keane has resigned as manager of Sunderland after 27 months in charge.

Keane, 37, took over in 2006 but chose to step down with the club lying 18th in the Premier League following five defeats in six matches.

First team coach Ricky Sbragia has been placed in temporary charge, assisted by coaches Neil Burley and Dwight Yorke.

"Roy's decision sums up his desire to always do what is best for the club, despite the club's efforts to keep him," said chairman Niall Quinn.

Roy deserves huge respect for his contribution and the manner in which he guided the club from the depths of the Championship back to the Premier League.

"His winning mentality and singled mindedness were just what this club needed. Even in his departure he has been more concerned for the welfare of the players and his staff than himself.

"The board has reluctantly accepted his decision and wish him and his family well for the future."


so what will happen now ....was he pushed or was it really his decision .......was it about time or could he have stayed and got Sunderland out of trouble

I think it was more of a mutual decision, as I can't see Roy Keane leaving on his own accord. He had the perfect job there, in the premier league if he did well he was a hero, if he did bad and they got relegated he wouldn't be a target as he did well to turn their fortunes around and get them promoted in the first place. His downfall was his poor movements in the transfer market, spending way too much on not that good players, that put pressure on the players he spent big money on and they weren't good enough to live up to expectations. Not a clever move if you ask me, not many chariman would be impressed by him and his decision to leave as soon as things turned sour. If I was a chairman this would really out me of trying to bring in a manager with that sort of attitude.

Next Sunderland manager, Sam Allardyce, I think he would be the right option for Sunderland football club. There is a good chance he could get them to grind out results and maybe stay in the premier league.

It was only a matter of time before he went,results have been dreadful of late and you could see the confidence draining from the whole team....

Maybe his beard was taking over?

though to be fair Keane, was always going to find it hard to attract the real quality players to a club like Sunderland so he is inevitably going to bring in mostly average players.

well i guess i was right once again. Roy is . useless.

he shows us what kind of a man he is by quitting at the first hint of trouble. the media persona that created the keane 'legend' shielded him from so much criticism and even joe public would argue with me when i ridiculed keane's amangerial abilities.

a complete bottler who simply does not have the brain for football. an uneducated fool with far too many hangers on and arselickers telling him how great he is when its simply not true, i include niall quinn in that.

apparantly Keane 'cant take the club any further' which is hilarious considering where they are at the moment. effectively he is saying he cant progress further than a squad full of championship standard long ball merchants which is all he has assembled with his 80 million pounds which is even funnier when you think of all the many simple minded people who were talking him up as ferguson's successor.

he should never get back into management again.

I have to agree though, he's made a complete joke of himself. Mick Macarthy must be a having a huge chuckle about this, since it was Keane criticising his methods at the 2002 World Cup. Many Irish fans took Keane's side because "he is a legend", but Macarthy emerged with the greater credit.

When you look how bad some of those Tottenham rejects are, it shows how well the Club did in finding an idiot like Keane to pay big money for them.

I can't believe he walked. That's a lot of rep points deducted Roy.

Keane, as a human being, is a disgrace and a coward.

like you say, he walked at the world cup when the hopes of his nation were on him. he assaulted haaland rather than confront him man to man. he has now walked out of a club he put in the relegation zone having wasted £80m and they still wanted him to stay. what kind of a man does things like that?

i feel for the fans of any club who have a chairman mug enough to employ this pathetic wimp of a man.

Seeing that Roy Keane had left Anton Ferdinand on the subs bench
after having spent £8 million pounds on him on Saturday was
a strange decision and replacing him with the useless Danny Collins just bizzare.

So Sunderland then go on and lose at home to Bolton 1-4 which was the final straw.

I guess the old saying that great players don't make great managers can be mentioned again here.

They should bring in Big Sam I think.

he would certainly slip right into the Keane blueprint that has been left with the players left at the club.

if they intend to carry on the traditional sunderland long ball game then fat sam is ideal.

Long ball is still very effective in the Premiership, unless you can attract top players, it's probably more effective than a passing game.

I think Sam Allardyce could do a good job at Sunderland, give their current squad and the stature of players they can attract.

Allardyce would be perfect,he brought over class players like Hierro,Djorkaeff and Anelka to Bolton so there's no reason why he couldn't attract top players to Sunderland if he was given the job

Keane should drop down to the Championship or League One and get some experience. I think his personality will be more effective at that level, which will help him ease into management.

Next up will be Blackburns Paul Ince in my opinion. His days are numbered.

Im surprised by the position Sunderland find themselved in at the moment, I really though they would do well this season. Thought they had a great chance of a midtable finish. Shows what I know, the playing staff is there for it tho.
