Tiffeny Milbrett in Chelsea?! |
|
From The Guardian:
Tiffeny breaks Chelsea fast Monday February 13, 2006 It should have been a straightforward weekend. Chelsea were due to host Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup - a match they would not have been widely fancied to win unless, say, a World Cup winner were unexpectedly to join their ranks. But that is exactly what appeared to be happening as word spread that Tiffeny Milbrett - a name as famous in the United States as Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain - was to fly to London along with the Canada international Christine Sinclair in time to keep Chelsea in the Premiership. Women's football is as much about socialising as sport; wild rumours delight and multiply. The exciting thing about this one is that it is (partly) true. According to Simon Greenberg, Chelsea's director of communications, the club have already sought international clearance for Milbrett and Sinclair, and this is now, "subject to Home Office clearance". "We are very eager to play this completely by the book," he said yesterday, when the Arsenal match was rained off. "If we can't get the necessary approvals for this season, we will be looking at next season. This is not just about bringing them in in the short term." Indeed, Chelsea's men have toured the US the past two summers; clearly two high-profile female players would help raise the club's profile in north America - and signal an unheralded commitment to the women's game. Ever since the female Blues shook buckets outside Stamford Bridge to raise money, Chelsea have been portrayed as uninterested to the point of meanness. Signing Milbrett and Sinclair would mark a turning point for the game in the UK and prove that one of football's biggest brands is prepared to put women at the heart of its drive for growth. Chelsea are second from bottom with two league games remaining, a position from which even Milbrett and Sinclair are unlikely to extricate them. But the Premiership is expanding to 12 teams and an A-list strike force could help in the all-important play-off - and by next season, who knows who could be on their books? |

Yes, it is a 'story' here in the states. Milbrett still has some 'gas left in her tank' and is a talented player, and Sinclair can be a very dangerous player. I'm not familiar with the Chelsea side and what these two players mean to the team as a whole, but they should be a help......

Just wanted to add to this.
I don't follow womens football, but am always interested in what is going on in this forum. Smithy and co. have got me looking out for Arsenal ladies results (more in the hope they lose lol) but that is just because I couldnt ever like an Arsenal team. But this news, ever though I dont know the players or the Chelsea team, it got me excited lol. How weird is that! |

Smithy = Smithy or Smithy = Agent Smith?
Let me just say that Millie & Sinclair outclass all the current Chelsea Ladies team players together And I'm glad you started to follow the women's game a little, Mr Dogg |

Chelsea are currently #9 in the league table (there are 10 teams)
Milbrett & Sinclair will sure make a difference and Chelsea might score a goal or two against Arsenal but I don't think they will beat us The last time the score was A 6:0 C. I've been to the game and I saw it It will be A 4:1 C or A 4:2 C or A 5:2 C or so Or so I hope |

But with these players, there is a chance they could attract other great players right? I mean if Milbrett is that great, and well known, other players would like to play alongside her?
Could this be the start of a new look Chelsea Womens team? |

I think they signed them for a short term though
As far as I understood, they are going to play in Canada afterwards

Awesome story.
I would like to know if womens football is big in the UK? In the States it is huge, in Germany even though they are the world champions it is still underrated. Unfortunately. Does anybody follow Chelsea in womans football? Thanks BJ |

I'm not sure how it is now in America, after the WUSA stopped existing.
I guess it is still popular though. I know it is very popular in Sweden and Germany, and I think those two countries have the best non-professional women's leagues in Europe. As for UK, it is hard for me to say, I am not British and I have been following the women's game in this country for a few months only. From what I saw there are 2 (3?) great teams in the league (Arsenal, Charlton and I'd add Everton as well) and the rest of the teams are a few classes lower Basically Arsenal and Charlton are eating their opponents for lunch Is women's football big in UK though? I guess it is quite popular, there are always fans at the games, and there are crowds for the bigger games as well. This is my answer to your question, I'm afraid I can't specify it better |

i think womens football has undoubtidly took steps forward the last few years, especially with participation and interest, however thats mostly at grassroots and the actual higher leagues havent got enough or as much support and interest as they deserve!its a shame but womens football is round 100 years older than mens so will never come close to catching up, its a bit depressin really!wish it was more popular!

Apparently the two new starts were missing It was a County Cup game so I think Milbrett & Sinclair will appear at the League games only... It's a shame cos I'll be watching Arsenal Ladies in Borehamwood then Anyway, both teams had their good and bad times today, the pitch was unbelievably muddy and slippery, the players kept sliding on it Lots of tackles, arguments with the ref etc. as well Nice goals though (as usual) - from Yanks, Lianne, Kelly (2) & Fleets (2) Well done Ladies! Again England coach Hope Powell was at the game - looking for fresh talents? |
