Juventus and Inter both slipped up in their
Champions League second round first leg ties, with Juve losing 3-2 at Werder Bremen and Inter needing a late equaliser at Ajax.
Both sides should have a very good chance of progressing after picking up vital away goals, but Fabio Capello and Roberto Mancini were nonetheless disappointed. Goals from Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet had given Juve a 2-1 lead before Werder hit back with two late strikes to steal the win. "The second goal was a lucky ricochet and unfortunately the winner was practically the last kick of the game and certainly an avoidable incident," fumed Fabio Capello. "Everyone is disappointed, but at the same time to score two goals away from home is a positive result."
Inter, meanwhile, were the ones requiring a late comeback after they fell behind to two first half goals at Ajax. Dejan Stankovic cut the defecit early inf the second half but it needed a Julio Cruz goal four minutes from time to seal the draw. Nerazzurri Coach Mancini was angry at what he saw as an arrogant performance by his side, but remained confident: "I believe we thought it would be simple and were punished for that. It's nonetheless a positive result and we could've gone 3-2 up at the end, we'll see what happens in a fortnight."
