Southampton manager Harry Redknapp remains keen to keep Peter Crouch after he reportedly turned down an offer of £5m from Portsmouth.
Redknapp has apparently attempted to deter Premiership clubs from approaching his star striker by slapping a £7m price-tag on his head. The ex-Hammers boss has scoffed at Pompey's offer saying: "Only £5m? Ridiculous. When I was at Portsmouth I sold him to Aston Villa for that figure. He was just 20 and had never played in the top flight." "Since then he has proved himself in the Premiership and broken into the England team. But we don't want to sell him." The Southampton ace has attracted interest from Portsmouth and Liverpool since the club's relegation from the Premiership. Crouch has admitted that he faces a dilemma over his Saints' future. The giant striker is grateful to Reedknapp for giving him his chance but he has expressed to play top-flight football and remain a part of the England set-up after making his international debut in England's tour of the USA. And he knows that his future prospects might be better served if he plays in the Premiership, rather than the Championship, next season. |
