Sir Alex Ferguson has managed to convince the Glazers to buy into his two-year plan to return Manchester United to their rightful place as the pre-eminent force in English football.
Contrary to press reports on Wednesday claiming that Ferguson had been given an ultimatum to deliver the title next season or face an uncertain future, the Scot is not under immediate pressure. A club source told The Sun: "It is laughable to say that Alex Ferguson has been given an ultimatum. "He has demonstrated over the decades that he does not need any encouragement to strive for success." Ferguson is reported to have had a meeting with Joel Glazer at the club's Carrington training ground last week during which he spelled out his plans. The 63-year-old stressed that United were very much in a transitional phase having brought in several youngsters. But with plans to build a team for the future around the precocious talents of Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney_79586.shtml'>Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher, Ferguson is confident he will have a side capable of dominating the game for years to come. The Red Devils boss is also confident that defenders Wes Brown (25) and John O'Shea (24) will mature into world class players. Ferguson said: "There is no question we have been trying to create a new team. Anyone who has been watching us can see that. "We've signed Cristiano Ronaldo and we've signed Rooney_79586.shtml'>Wayne Rooney, who have given the team youth. "We've got Darren Fletcher coming through too and he has been fantastic for us. He's going to be a great player for us in the midfield." Despite their tender age, Fletcher, Ronaldo and Rooney are already regulars for their countries, while the latter two have already established themselves at Old Trafford and acquitted themselves admirably during an under-achieving season. Ferguson enthused: "Ronaldo is 20, Rooney is 19. Those two are going to be fantastic players." |
